Trump Diagnosed with Chronic Venous Insufficiency

The White House announced on July 17, 2025, that President Donald Trump has been diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), a common circulatory condition. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed the diagnosis during a briefing in Washington, D.C., following public observations of swelling in the president’s lower legsChronic venous insufficiency occurs when the valves in the leg veins weaken or become damaged, impairing the return of blood to the heart.

This leads to blood pooling in the lower extremities, often causing swelling (edema), a heavy or achy sensation, and in some cases, skin changes or varicose veins. The condition is particularly prevalent in individuals over 70, and Trump was 79 at the time of diagnosis.Doctors conducted a thorough medical evaluation, including bilateral lower extremity venous Doppler ultrasounds. The tests confirmed CVI but explicitly ruled out more serious concerns, such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), arterial disease, or any cardiac issues. An echocardiogram showed normal heart structure and function.
