Chapter 2: The Hidden Truth Behind the Walls

Chapter 2: The Hidden Truth Behind the Walls

The dinner ended without ceremony.

The three women left with forced smiles, their heels clicking sharply against marble that now felt like rejection.

No one spoke about “Mrs. Reed” anymore.

Not that night.

Not after what they had seen.

Later, Adrian stood outside his son’s nursery, watching through the cracked door.

Emma sat on the floor inside, reading a worn picture book. His son leaned against her legs, already half-asleep, fingers still tangled in her sleeve.

It looked… natural.

Too natural.

Like something that had been happening long before he ever noticed.

“Does he always choose her?” Adrian asked quietly from the doorway.

Emma turned, startled. She immediately tried to stand.

“I’m sorry, sir—I shouldn’t—”

“Don’t,” he interrupted again, softer this time. “Just answer.”

Emma hesitated. “He doesn’t choose me,” she said carefully. “He responds to safety.”

That word hit harder than any accusation.

Adrian stepped inside.

The room smelled like warm milk and baby powder, not perfume or wealth or power. It smelled like time spent.

“How long?” he asked.

Emma looked down. “Since he was born.”

A long pause.

Then Adrian asked the question he had avoided for too long.

“And where was I?”

Emma didn’t answer immediately.

But her silence did.
