Chapter 17 - The Empty Chair.

Mara stared at her mother's face on the monitor.
The betrayal hurt differently because this time Celeste was not hiding behind protection.
She was making a choice in real time.
Adrian looked at Mara.
“Do you want me to shut this down?”
She shook her head.
“No.”
Her voice was quiet.
“I want to hear her.”
Celeste stood beside Thomas in the windowless room.
Thomas looked furious.
“Do not listen to her.”
Celeste turned toward him.
“You know what termination does.”
“It destroys Mirror.”
“It destroys every record proving who used it.”
Mara frowned.
Thomas answered.
“The evidence can be extracted first.”
“No.”
Celeste looked at the camera.
“The system was built to take its history with it.”
Adrian understood.
“If we terminate Mirror, the crimes disappear with the mechanism.”
Kane nodded slowly.
“No audit trail.”
“No proof of forged approvals.”
“No proof the missing money was staged through copied identities.”
Marcus's voice came through the earpiece.
“Meaning Adrian and I are left holding the evidence against us.”
Celeste nodded.
“Exactly.”
Mara's anger sharpened.
“So you want to keep Mirror alive to clear our names.”
“I want to copy its archive before we destroy it.”
Thomas shook his head.
“You cannot copy the archive without taking control.”
Celeste looked at him.
“Someone has to.”
Nolan stared at the CONTROL option on his terminal.
Mara realized what her mother intended.
“You want Nolan to become controller.”
Celeste's face tightened.
“Temporarily.”
Nolan laughed once without humor.
“That word has ruined a lot of lives.”
Thomas leaned toward the camera.
“Mara, listen to me.”
“The controller is not a job.”
“It is a trap.”
“The system starts by giving access.”
“Then it creates dependence.”
“Then it creates reasons you cannot walk away.”
Celeste interrupted.
“And if we destroy it now, Adrian may face criminal charges for transactions he never approved.”
Mara looked at Adrian.
He did not hesitate.
“Destroy it.”
Celeste stared at him.
“You could lose everything.”
Adrian's voice remained calm.
“I have spent my entire life protecting a structure that allowed this to exist.”
“If losing it is the price of ending this, fine.”
Mara searched his face.
There was no performance in it.
No heroic speech.
Just a decision.
The trust timer displayed forty-one minutes.
Eleanor called again.
“The board has reconvened.”
Mara looked at the screen.
“Without us?”
“They are trying to remove Adrian before your trust vote completes.”
Adrian frowned.
“Can they?”
“Not if Mara exercises control first.”
Mara closed her eyes briefly.
The system had constructed a perfect pressure chamber.
Save Adrian by activating the trust.
Activate the trust and complete Mirror's succession.
Complete succession and risk handing control to Nolan.
Refuse and let the board remove Adrian under fabricated evidence.
Mara opened her eyes.
“Go back to the boardroom.”
Adrian looked at her.
“You?”
“I'm coming.”
Nolan pointed at the terminal.
“What do I do?”
“Nothing.”
“The timer—”
“Nothing.”
Mara's voice became firm.
“If Mirror wants all of us rushing, we stop rushing.”
They returned to Vale headquarters with twelve minutes remaining.
The boardroom was louder than before.
Directors argued across the table.
Kane entered first.
Adrian followed.
Mara walked in last.
The room quieted.
Eleanor appeared on the large monitor from the stone house.
Celeste and Thomas were gone from the feed.
Helen Ward looked at Mara.
“The trust requires your decision.”
“I know.”
Kane placed a document in front of her.
“The board is prepared to suspend Adrian pending an external investigation.”
Adrian did not look at the paper.
Mara did.
“Who drafted this?”
“Helen and outside counsel.”
Mara looked at Helen.
“Did you?”
Helen hesitated.
That was enough.
Mara picked up the document.
The language was polished.
Too polished.
It referenced facts from the Mirror audit that had never been disclosed to the board.
Mara held it up.
“This was written before this morning.”
Helen's face changed.
Kane took the document and scanned it.
“She is right.”
A clause referenced the 2:13 access breach before Marcus had officially reported it.
Adrian looked around the table.
“Someone knew the breach would happen.”
The directors went silent.
Mara sat in the controlling trustee's chair.
The chair had been empty all morning.
She placed both hands on the table.
“Mirror is listening to everything we do.”
A few directors looked toward the ceiling.
Mara continued.
“So I am going to give it what it wants.”
Adrian looked at her.
She met his eyes.
Then she opened the trust ballot.
REMOVE ADRIAN VALE?
YES.
NO.
The timer showed one minute and thirty seconds.
Adrian said nothing.
Mara pressed YES.
The boardroom erupted.
Marcus stared at her.
Kane swore.
Even Eleanor looked surprised.
Adrian did not move.
The screen displayed the result.
ADRIAN VALE REMOVED AS CHIEF EXECUTIVE.
EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY.
Mara looked at him.
For one painful second, he believed she had chosen the company over him.
Then every door in the boardroom locked.
The lights dimmed.
A new message appeared.
SUCCESSION COMPLETE.
CONTROLLER INSTALLATION REQUIRES PHYSICAL PRESENCE OF ALL FOUNDING PARTIES.
Eleanor stood abruptly on the monitor.
Mara smiled without warmth.
“That is why I voted yes.”
Adrian understood.
The trust had not only forced Mara to decide his position.
It had forced Mirror to reveal its final requirement.
All founding parties.
Not their representatives.
Not copied credentials.
Physical presence.
Mara looked at Eleanor.
“You knew, didn't you?”
Eleanor's silence answered.
Mara leaned back in the chair.
“Then you better get here.”
A final line appeared beneath the installation notice.
FOUNDING PARTY FOUR IDENTIFIED.
SAMUEL VOSS.
STATUS: PRESENT.
Adrian slowly looked around the locked boardroom.
Voss had supposedly been dead for thirteen years.

According to Mirror, he was somewhere in the room.
