Chapter 1: The Envelope They Never Wanted Opened

Chapter 1: The Envelope They Never Wanted Opened
The entire courtyard fell silent.
Even the birds seemed to stop singing.
The university president looked from the envelope in Mia's hands to the furious man charging toward the stage.
A campus security officer stepped between them.
"Sir, you need to stay where you are."
"This is a family matter!" her father shouted.
"No," Mia replied, her voice echoing through the microphone the president had quietly handed her. "It stopped being a family matter the day they committed fraud."
Every phone in the audience rose into the air.
Students began recording.
Parents whispered.
Faculty members exchanged uneasy glances.
Mia slowly opened the envelope.
"I've carried these documents for two years," she said. "I promised myself I wouldn't expose them unless they forced me to."
She looked directly at her parents.
"You forced me."
Inside were copies of financial aid records, bank statements, emails, and notarized affidavits.
"I received a full academic scholarship before my freshman year."
Gasps spread across the crowd.
"The scholarship covered my tuition."
She held up another document.
"But the university also approved emergency housing assistance after my parents claimed they had no income."
The president frowned.
"I never filed those applications."
Silence.
"My parents forged my signature."
Another document.
"They opened a bank account using my student information."
Another.
"The refund checks were deposited there."
Another.
"I never saw a single dollar."
Her father's face lost all color.
"She's lying!"
Mia calmly held up a forensic handwriting report.
"The state examiner already confirmed the signatures weren't mine."
Someone in the audience whispered,
"Oh my God..."
Her mother reached for Ethan.
"We're leaving."
"No," said a police officer who had quietly arrived after campus security made the call.
"I don't think you are."
The officer accepted copies of the documents from the university president.
"What exactly are these?"
Mia answered without hesitation.
"Evidence of identity theft, financial fraud, and theft of educational funds."
Ethan finally spoke.
"This isn't my fault!"
Mia turned toward him.
"I know."
Everyone looked surprised.
"You were the favorite."
He blinked.
"But favorites still have choices."
She pulled one final document from the folder.
"This is a transfer receipt."
His confident expression shattered.
"The money stolen from my education paid for your luxury apartment."
The crowd erupted.
Ethan staggered backward.
"I... I didn't know..."
Mia looked him straight in the eyes.
"You signed every transfer."
