Chapter 1: The Cellar Beneath the Ballroom

Chapter 1: The Cellar Beneath the Ballroom
No one moved.
Not even Camilla.
The silence inside Halcyon House became heavier than the crystal chandeliers hanging above them.
My coworker ended his call.
"They're on their way."
The words echoed across the ballroom.
Camilla finally laughed, though the sound lacked confidence.
"You can't simply shut down a charity gala because you don't like the wine."
"I don't dislike it," I replied.
"I know it."
I picked up the bottle carefully, making sure every camera captured the label.
"The seal was replaced."
"The cork has been reinserted."
"The capsule belongs to a different bottling line."
A murmur swept through the guests.
The sommelier's hands trembled.
I turned the bottle over.
"The lot number belongs to a production run recalled three years ago."
Someone near the auction stage whispered,
"Impossible..."
I looked directly at Camilla.
"Unless someone intentionally put recalled bottles back into circulation."
The ballroom erupted.
Reporters rushed forward.
Donors began stepping away from the tasting tables.
The charity organizers looked horrified.
Then the hotel's security director approached.
"What authority do you have to make these accusations?"
Instead of answering, I removed my identification.
Federal Food Safety Enforcement.
The badge reflected beneath the chandeliers.
"I'm not making accusations."
"I'm beginning an official investigation."
At that exact moment, sirens echoed outside.
Black government vehicles rolled beneath the front entrance.
Inspectors entered in dark jackets.
Evidence cases in hand.
One spoke only four words.
"Seal every storage room."
Staff immediately locked every exit leading toward the underground wine cellar.
The sommelier suddenly turned.
And ran.
He barely reached the service hallway before two investigators intercepted him.
As officers searched his pockets, a single brass key fell onto the marble floor.
Stamped with only one word.
PRIVATE.
I looked toward the cellar entrance.

"I think," I said quietly,
"that's where tonight's real auction has been hiding."
