Chapter 1: Every Camera Has a Memory

Chapter 1: Every Camera Has a Memory

The silence inside the hospital room became unbearable.

Vanessa's confidence cracked for the first time.

She looked toward the black security camera in the corner and forced a laugh.

"So what? A camera doesn't tell the whole story."

My father finally stepped inside.

His polished shoes echoed across the tile floor.

"It tells enough."

He nodded once toward the hospital administrator who had arrived behind him with two security officers.

"I've already requested that the footage be preserved."

Vanessa's eyes widened.

"You can't just—"

"I already did."

The administrator cleared his throat.

"Mrs. Cross, the footage has been copied to multiple secure servers. It cannot be altered."

Vanessa turned sharply toward Ethan.

"Say something!"

Ethan opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

The nurses were still checking the fetal monitor.

The baby's heartbeat had finally slowed back into a steady rhythm.

One nurse looked at me gently.

"Your baby is stable... but that stress could have caused premature labor."

Those words landed like a hammer.

My father slowly faced Ethan.

"My daughter and my grandchild almost paid for your affair."

"It wasn't like that," Ethan whispered.

"No?"

My father reached into his briefcase.

He placed a thick envelope on the hospital table.

Hotel invoices.

Flight records.

Restaurant reservations.

Private text messages.

Each page landed harder than the last.

Vanessa stared in horror.

"Where did you get those?"

"You left more fingerprints than you imagined."

Then he slid one final document toward Ethan.

Yesterday's "financial paperwork."

Except now every highlighted paragraph was marked in red.

"You tried to transfer Lena's shares into your holding company while she was medicated."

Ethan's face drained completely.

"I...I wasn't..."

"Finished lying?"

The hospital room fell silent again.

Then another voice interrupted.

"I believe these documents belong to our investigation."

Two detectives stepped through the doorway.

One carried a warrant.

The other carried handcuffs.

Neither of them looked interested in excuses.
