Chapter 14: On His Knees
She looked down at him.
He was literally on his knees before her.
In front of the entire city.
Exactly how he had demanded she be on the night he threw her out.
The poetic justice was deafening.
Andrew couldn't breathe.
"Mariana," he whispered, his voice cracking. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."
The crowd watched in hushed fascination.
Some recognized him. Whispers rippled through the ballroom.
Isn't that her ex-husband?
The one who lost his company?
Mariana didn't gloat.
She didn't raise her voice.
She simply looked at him with an expression of mild pity.
"Be careful with the glass, Mr. Sterling," she said smoothly.
"You wouldn't want to ruin the floor."
She turned to the catering manager, who was rushing over, looking terrified.
"Please ensure this mess is cleaned up immediately," she instructed.
"And send this man to the kitchens. He's clearly not suited for the front of the house."
"Right away, Ms. Escalante," the manager bowed.
Mariana didn't look back at Andrew.
She simply stepped around him and continued her walk through the ballroom.
Andrew stayed on the floor, picking up the pieces of his shattered pride.
