Chapter 1 – The Bride Walks Toward the Trap

THEY THREATENED TO BANKRUPT MY FAMILY IF MY SISTER CANCELED THE WEDDING—SO I TOLD HER TO WALK DOWN THE AISLE... NOT TO MARRY HIM, BUT TO HELP ME DESTROY HIS EMPIRE IN FRONT OF EVERYONE.

The zipper stopped.

So did my heartbeat.

My little sister stood beneath the warm lights of the bridal boutique, wearing an ivory gown that belonged in a fairy tale.

Until the fabric slipped.

The room froze.

Fresh lash marks covered her back.

Dark.

Raw.

Swollen.

Some were still bleeding.

No one spoke.

Not because there was nothing to say.

Because horror had stolen every word.

The seamstress covered her mouth.

"Oh... my God."

Lily jerked the dress back into place, clutching the fabric against herself with shaking hands.

"Please, Eleanor..."

"Don't."

I crossed the room without another word.

Stopped inches away.

"Who did this?"

Her eyes stayed fixed on the floor.

She couldn't even look at me.

When she finally answered, her voice was barely a whisper.

"Julian."

The groom.

The charming billionaire heir.

The man who smiled for every camera.

Shook every hand.

Donated to children's hospitals.

And beat my sister behind closed doors.

My fists tightened.

My voice never did.

"Why?"

A hollow laugh escaped her lips.

"Because... I told him I was scared."

Everything inside me went cold.

She admitted she was afraid of the man she was about to marry.

So he punished her for saying it.

The seamstress quietly slipped out.

The door clicked shut.

Now it was just the two of us.

Lily grabbed my hands so tightly her fingers trembled.

"You don't understand."

"If I leave him..."

She couldn't finish.

Tears did it for her.

"Harrison Sterling will destroy Mom and Dad."

"He already owns half their debt."

"He'll call every loan."

"Cancel every supplier contract."

"Bury us in lawsuits."

"We'll lose the company."

"The house."

"Everything."

I looked at my little sister.

The same little girl who used to hide behind me every time thunder shook the windows.

Now she was hiding inside a wedding dress.

From the man waiting at the altar.

"He said no one would believe me."

She wiped at her tears.

"He said you're just a divorced corporate consultant."

"That you're powerless."

For the first time that day...

I smiled.

Not because anything was funny.

Because powerful men always make the same fatal mistake.

They measure a woman by what she looks like.

Never by what she knows.

For six years, billionaires had looked at my black suit...

My quiet voice...

My ordinary name...

And assumed I wasn't dangerous.

None of them knew why federal prosecutors answered my calls before they answered anyone else's.

None of them knew how many multinational fraud cases I had quietly built from the shadows.

None of them knew how many CEOs walked into court believing they were untouchable...

Only to leave in handcuffs.

I brushed the tears from Lily's face.

"Did you keep everything?"

She nodded.

"The emails."

"The threats."

"The recordings."

"The photographs."

"I saved all of it."

I kissed her forehead.

"Good."

She searched my face.

"We still can't cancel the wedding."

"If we do..."

"They'll destroy our family."

I turned toward the mirror.

Toward the wounds carved across her back.

Then I smiled again.

This time...

Without warmth.

"We're not canceling anything."

She stared at me in confusion.

"What?"

"We're giving them exactly what they asked for."

"The perfect wedding."

"The perfect guests."

"The perfect audience."

Because when Julian Sterling walked down that aisle...

He believed he was about to marry the woman he had broken.

What he didn't know...

Was that every step toward that altar brought him closer to the end of his family's empire.

Before the vows were finished...

Before the applause even faded...

The Sterling dynasty would begin collapsing...

In front of every billionaire...

Every politician...

May you like

Every reporter...

And every single person who had ever believed they were too powerful to fall.
