Chapter 1: The Footage Nobody Could Explain Away

Chapter 1: The Footage Nobody Could Explain Away

The ambulance doors slammed shut as paramedics rushed Sophie toward the emergency room.

I climbed inside beside her, pressing a clean towel against the cut above her ear while she squeezed my hand.

"Mom... am I in trouble?"

My throat closed.

"No, sweetheart. You didn't do anything wrong."

Outside, police officers remained at the Whitmore Hotel, separating witnesses before anyone could leave.

Detective Angela Morrison arrived at the hospital less than an hour later.

"I understand your daughter was assaulted," she said gently.

I nodded.

"My brother hit her."

She looked surprised.

"With witnesses?"

"Two hundred."

"And nobody intervened?"

I laughed bitterly.

"They're my family."

She didn't ask another question.

Instead, she opened her notebook.

"I've already requested the hotel's surveillance footage."

Back at the ballroom, Preston had regained his confidence.

He stood beside Madison, reassuring guests that everything had been a misunderstanding.

"My niece attacked me first," he claimed.

"My sister has always been jealous."

Richard Bennett repeated the same story.

"My son merely defended himself."

Carolyn dabbed fake tears from her eyes.

"This has been such a difficult day for Preston."

The hotel manager, however, refused to erase the footage.

"Our cameras automatically upload recordings to an off-site server every five minutes," he explained.

"Nothing can be deleted."

For the first time that evening, Preston's face turned pale.

Three hours later everyone gathered in the hotel's conference room.

Police officers.

The hotel manager.

Several wedding guests.

My parents.

Preston.

Madison.

The detective connected a laptop to the large television.

"No interruptions," she said.

"We'll watch from the moment the phone disappeared."

The room fell silent.

The recording began.

Guests laughed.

Servers walked between tables.

Sophie remained beside me exactly where I'd said she had.

Then the camera zoomed toward the head table.

Preston looked around carefully.

No one was watching.

He slipped his own titanium phone into the pocket of Sophie's denim jacket hanging on the back of her chair.

Gasps echoed through the room.

Madison covered her mouth.

"Oh my God..."

The detective paused the video.

"Would anyone like to explain that?"

Nobody spoke.

She pressed play again.

The footage showed Preston marching toward our table, dramatically searching the jacket before pulling out the phone exactly where he'd hidden it.

Then came the final scene.

Me stepping in front of Sophie.

Preston grabbing the oak menu board.

Swinging.

The board smashing into an eight-year-old child's head.

The impact looked even more violent on camera than I remembered.

The detective stopped the video once more.

She turned toward Preston.

"Stand up."

He didn't move.

"Mr. Bennett..."

Her voice hardened.

"You're under arrest for aggravated battery against a child, filing a false police report, and evidence of attempted fraud."

Handcuffs clicked around the wrists of the golden son.

For the first time in thirty-four years...

No one could save him.
