Chapter 2: Thirty Years of Lies

Chapter 2: Thirty Years of Lies

The wedding ended before the cake was cut.

Guests left in silence.

Videos recorded on their phones spread across the internet before sunrise.

The headline was everywhere.

"Chicago Groom Arrested After Framing Eight-Year-Old Flower Girl."

By morning...

The calls began.

Not to apologize.

To negotiate.

My father arrived at the hospital carrying flowers.

My mother followed behind him.

Neither asked about Sophie's concussion.

Neither asked if she was scared.

My father cleared his throat.

"Your brother made a mistake."

"A mistake?"

I stared at him.

"He framed my daughter."

"He assaulted a child."

"He tried to destroy her future."

My mother wiped away fake tears.

"If you testify..."

"His career is over."

I laughed.

For the first time in decades...

I truly laughed.

"Good."

Their faces hardened.

"You'd destroy your own brother?"

I looked through the hospital window where Sophie slept peacefully.

"No."

"He destroyed himself."

The courtroom was packed three months later.

Prosecutors played the CCTV.

Again.

And again.

Frame by frame.

Preston's attorney argued stress.

Wedding pressure.

Emotional instability.

The jury needed less than two hours.

Guilty.

On every count.

As deputies led him away...

He finally looked at me.

"This is your fault."

I simply answered,

"No."

"This is the first consequence you've ever faced."

My parents never looked at me again.

Not because they believed I was wrong.

Because admitting the truth meant admitting they had spent thirty years creating the monster sitting in prison.

Their silence became their punishment.

May you like

But mine...

Was finally over.
