Chapter 2 – The House That Was Never His

Three days later, Daniel returned with a lawyer.

He expected to walk back into the apartment.

Instead, two police officers met him in the lobby.

"You're prohibited from entering."

He laughed.

"My wife is emotional."

The officer handed him the court order.

"Your wife requested protection."

His smile disappeared.

Meanwhile, upstairs, I sat with my own attorney.

She spread documents across the table.

"Every mortgage payment came from your account."

She slid over another file.

"The utilities."

Another.

"The property taxes."

Another.

"The renovation invoices."

Every receipt carried one name.

Mine.

Daniel had spent years pretending he was the provider.

In reality...

He had quietly lived off my inheritance while convincing everyone that I needed him.

Gloria refused to accept it.

She stormed into the courthouse during the preliminary hearing wearing pearls and outrage.

"My son built that home!"

My attorney calmly placed certified bank records before the judge.

Payment after payment.

Year after year.

Signed.

Verified.

Undisputed.

The courtroom fell silent.

Then came the security footage.

Daniel watched himself on the courtroom monitor.

His own camera.

His own dining room.

His own hand striking my face.

The audio was painfully clear.

No editing.

No missing frames.

No excuses.

Even Gloria stopped speaking.

Daniel lowered his head.

For the first time in our marriage...

He had nowhere left to hide.
