Chapter 1 — The Monster Who Couldn't Look Away

Chapter 1 — The Monster Who Couldn't Look Away

The room remained silent.

Pearls continued rolling across the polished hardwood, disappearing beneath antique furniture like tiny stars swallowed by darkness.

Enzo DeLuca didn't move.

He had seen torture rooms.

He had cleaned blood from warehouse floors.

He had watched men die without blinking.

Nothing had ever frozen him the way Harper Whitcomb's back did.

The scars were not random.

They were systematic.

Evenly spaced.

Old lash marks crossed by newer ones.

Some thin.

Some thick enough to distort the muscles beneath her skin.

Years.

Not weeks.

Years.

Harper stayed on her knees.

Her breathing became shallow.

"I'll clean everything," she whispered.

"I'll sew the dress."

"I won't tell anyone."

"I'll be quiet."

Every sentence sounded rehearsed.

As though someone had forced her to memorize survival.

Enzo finally found his voice.

"Who did that to you?"

She flinched.

No answer.

"I'm asking you."

Still silence.

Then...

"My father doesn't like people asking questions."

The words landed harder than any confession.

Enzo crouched several feet away, careful not to touch her.

"For how long?"

Harper stared at the floor.

"I don't remember when it started."

A pause.

"I only remember when it stopped hurting."

His stomach tightened.

People did not stop hurting.

They simply learned pain was permanent.

"What happened if you cried?"

"He hit harder."

"If you fought?"

"He locked me in the cellar."

"If you ran?"

She finally looked at him.

"I never made it past the front gate."

Outside, snow drifted softly across the estate.

Inside, Enzo felt something unfamiliar.

Not pity.

Rage.

Cold.

Patient.

The kind that waited.

He stood, walked to the closet, removed one of his black cashmere robes, and placed it over her shoulders.

Harper stared at him in confusion.

"You..."

Her voice trembled.

"...aren't angry?"

Enzo looked at the torn wedding gown lying across the floor.

"I think," he said quietly,

"I'm angry at the wrong person."

The next morning, the DeLuca estate was unusually silent.

Housekeeper Rosa nearly dropped her breakfast tray when she saw Harper walking through the dining room wearing Enzo's robe.

No bruises.

No tears.

No screaming from the master bedroom.

That wasn't how mafia marriages usually began.

Enzo entered moments later.

He sat across from Harper.

Poured coffee.

Cut his own toast.

Completely normal.

His security chief, Marco, leaned toward him.

"The Whitcomb surveillance files arrived."

Enzo opened the folder.

Inside were hundreds of photographs.

Board meetings.

Private jets.

Political dinners.

Charity galas.

Then...

One picture stopped him.

Harper.

Sixteen years old.

Standing beside Preston Whitcomb at a fundraising banquet.

Her smile looked perfect.

Until Enzo noticed one tiny detail.

Her right hand.

Hidden behind her back.

Wrapped tightly around her own wrist.

Like she was trying to stop herself from shaking.

Marco frowned.

"There's another file."

A sealed envelope.

"No photographs."

"Medical records."

Enzo opened it.

Hospital visits.

Broken ribs.

Dislocated shoulder.

Concussions.

Every report carried the same explanation.

Horse riding accident.

Fell down stairs.

Kitchen accident.

Door hit her.

He closed the folder slowly.

"Lies."

Marco nodded.

"Every doctor was paid."

Enzo looked toward the window.

"Prepare the cars."

"Where are we going?"

"To visit my father-in-law."

Marco smiled.

It wasn't a pleasant smile.

"Alive?"

"For now."

May you like

Because death...

...was suddenly beginning to feel too merciful.
