Chapter 2: The Collapse of the Whitlock Name

Chapter 2: The Collapse of the Whitlock Name

Within minutes, things changed.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

But legally.

The venue lights shifted slightly as staff began receiving instructions through discreet earpieces. Guests noticed security personnel repositioning themselves near exits. Servers stopped pouring champagne.

Something was happening—something no one had been informed about.

Andrew stepped closer to Clara, his voice urgent now. “If this is about money, we can fix it. Whatever she did—”

Clara interrupted him.

“This isn’t about money.”

She handed the folder to the venue manager.

“Proceed.”

Patricia’s face went pale. “Proceed with what?”

The manager hesitated only a second.

Then he spoke.

“Per the owner’s directive, the Whitlock wedding contract is hereby terminated due to breach of property conduct and destruction of venue assets.”

A collective gasp swept the room.

“The wedding is over,” he added.

Andrew froze. “You can’t just cancel a wedding in the middle of it.”

Clara turned to him.

“I didn’t cancel your wedding, Andrew.”

She looked down at the torn lace still lying on the marble floor.

“Your mother did.”

Patricia’s voice broke into fury. “You’re insane! Do you know what this will do to our family name?”

Clara finally stepped forward—slow, controlled.

“No,” she said quietly. “But I know what your family did to mine before I ever entered it.”

That stopped everything.

Even Patricia fell silent for half a second.

Clara’s eyes hardened.

“You assumed I was here to be chosen.”

She shook her head slightly.

“I was here to decide whether you were worth choosing.”

Then she turned away.

And for the first time that night, Andrew reached for her wrist.

“Clara—don’t do this.”

She stopped.

But she didn’t turn back.

“Let go,” she said softly.

And he did.

Because something in her voice told him this wasn’t anger anymore.

It was finality.
