Chapter 2: The Woman They Never Truly Saw

Chapter 2: The Woman They Never Truly Saw

Andrew followed Clara into the estate's private garden after the guests had quietly dispersed.

The music had stopped.

The celebration was over before the wedding had even begun.

Moonlight reflected across the fountain where they had once dreamed of taking wedding photographs.

"I love you," Andrew whispered.

"I still do."

Clara smiled sadly.

"I believe you."

His face brightened.

"But love without courage," she continued, "cannot protect anyone."

He lowered his head.

"I was trying to keep the peace."

"No."

"You were protecting your mother's comfort."

"You weren't protecting mine."

Every sentence carried years of hidden pain.

"I defended you when strangers criticized you."

"I defended you when business partners doubted you."

"But today..."

"You watched the woman you claimed to love stand alone."

Andrew closed his eyes.

Because she was right.

Every word.

Every painful word.

Behind them, Patricia hurried into the garden.

"Andrew!"

"Tell her this is ridiculous."

She turned toward Clara.

"I've already forgiven you."

"You can stop acting dramatic."

Clara looked at her quietly.

"Forgiven me?"

Patricia folded her arms.

"You embarrassed me."

"You made everyone think I was cruel."

A few remaining guests overheard the conversation.

One elderly woman stepped forward.

"No, Patricia."

"You did that yourself."

Several guests nodded.

A famous fashion designer slowly approached Clara.

"I recognized your embroidery the moment the dress tore."

"You made it yourself, didn't you?"

Clara nodded.

"Every stitch."

The designer smiled with admiration.

"I've spent thirty years in couture."

"I've never seen craftsmanship that beautiful."

Patricia suddenly realized what she had actually destroyed.

Not just an expensive dress.

A work of art.

One that could never be recreated exactly the same.

For the first time that evening...

Even she felt ashamed.
