Richard faced the guests.
"Many of you believe Emily is simply a waitress."
He smiled gently.
"She volunteered to work tonight because she wanted every scholarship dollar to go directly to the children instead of paying additional event staff."
The audience stared at Emily in disbelief.
Richard continued.
"Three years ago, Emily donated nearly ten million dollars anonymously to rebuild hospitals after the coastal hurricanes."
Gasps echoed across the ballroom.
"Anonymous?"
"It was her?"
Emily quietly shook her head.
"I never wanted recognition."
Richard nodded.
"Exactly."
He then revealed the final surprise.
"Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to introduce the newest member of the Caldwell Foundation Board..."
He paused.
"...Emily Carter."
The room exploded into applause.
Vanessa stumbled backward.
"You... you're on the board?"
Emily smiled politely.
"I accepted the position this morning."
Vanessa suddenly remembered every cruel word she had spoken.
Every insult.
Every threat.
Every moment she had treated Emily like she was invisible.
