Chapter 1: The Truth Hidden Behind the Death Notice

Chapter 1: The Truth Hidden Behind the Death Notice
Alejandro slowly stood, never taking his eyes off his mother.
"This is all a misunderstanding," Margaret repeated, forcing another trembling smile.
"No," Alejandro said quietly. "It's a crime."
The room fell silent.
Margaret's face drained of color.
"You don't understand what happened—"
"I understand perfectly."
He reached into the pocket of his military jacket and placed a thick envelope on the table.
Inside were official military documents.
Mission reports.
Medical records.
Communication logs.
Every page carried military seals.
"I was never declared dead."
Elena looked from the papers to her husband.
"What...?"
Alejandro turned toward her, his voice gentle.
"Our convoy was attacked near the border. We were cut off from communication for twelve days. Headquarters listed us as missing, not killed."
He pointed toward the death notice lying on the kitchen table.
"That document is fake."
Margaret staggered backward.
"No..."
Alejandro picked up the forged notice.
"I spoke with military investigators this morning after landing. They told me someone had contacted a dishonest printer using classified information about our deployment."
He looked directly at his mother.
"The fake report was delivered before I even returned to the country."
Elena slowly realized what that meant.
Margaret hadn't acted out of grief.
She had acted on a schedule.
She had expected Alejandro to stay missing just long enough to steal his child.
Alejandro turned another page.
"The custody documents were filed three weeks ago."
Elena's hands shook.
"They were already prepared..."
"Because she expected this."
Margaret suddenly screamed.
"I was protecting this family!"
"No," Alejandro answered.
"You were trying to own it."
Just then, loud knocks echoed through the front door.
Three police officers entered, followed by two military investigators.
One investigator held up an arrest warrant.
"Margaret Castillo, you are under arrest for fraud, document forgery, attempted coercion, and conspiracy."
Margaret looked desperately toward her son.
"Alejandro... please..."
For the first time in his life...
He looked at his mother like a complete stranger.
"You stopped being my mother the moment you threatened my wife."
As officers placed handcuffs around her wrists, Margaret's confident smile finally disappeared.

She realized she had not lost because Alejandro survived.
She had lost because the truth had.
