Chapter 1: The Woman Who Didn't Step Back

Chapter 1: The Woman Who Didn't Step Back

The first person to move wasn't Vivian Whitmore.

It was her bodyguard.

A broad-shouldered man in a tailored black suit stepped forward, reaching for Grace's arm.

"You've lost your mind," he growled.

Grace didn't let go.

Her heart hammered against her ribs so violently she thought everyone in the ballroom could hear it.

She wasn't trying to embarrass anyone.

She had reacted before she could think.

She had seen Vivian raise her jeweled hand toward the elderly woman in the wheelchair.

She had seen fear flicker across those gentle silver eyes.

And her body simply moved.

"I'm sorry," Grace said, her voice trembling but steady.

"But you don't hit an elderly woman."

The room held its breath.

Vivian slowly turned toward Grace.

Her face remained calm.

That was somehow worse than anger.

"You know who I am?"

Grace swallowed.

"Yes."

"And yet you grabbed me?"

"I stopped you."

A ripple of whispers spread through the ballroom.

Marcus, the banquet manager, looked ready to faint.

Grace knew exactly what came next.

She would be fired.

Probably blacklisted.

Maybe sued.

She almost apologized.

Almost.

Then she looked down at the woman in the wheelchair.

Margaret's fingers were shaking.

Just slightly.

Enough to remind Grace of her own mother's hands when pain became unbearable.

No.

She couldn't apologize for protecting someone who couldn't protect herself.

Vivian smiled.

It wasn't a pleasant smile.

"You'll never work in this city again."

Marcus rushed between them.

"Mrs. Whitmore, please... she's young. She made a mistake."

Grace opened her mouth.

"I don't need anyone speaking for—"

"Enough."

The voice came quietly.

Yet every conversation in the ballroom stopped instantly.

Even Vivian Whitmore froze.

From behind the marble column, a tall man stepped into the light.

Perfectly tailored charcoal suit.

Black silk tie.

Dark eyes that revealed absolutely nothing.

No raised voice.

No dramatic entrance.

Only silence.

The kind of silence powerful men carried with them.

Dominic DeLuca had arrived.

His gaze never touched Vivian.

Never touched Marcus.

He walked directly to the wheelchair.

Knelt beside Margaret.

And gently picked a tiny piece of broken crystal from the blanket covering her knees.

"Are you hurt, Mama?"

Margaret smiled softly.

"No."

She glanced toward Grace.

"Because of her."

Dominic slowly stood.

For several long seconds...

He simply looked at Grace.

No expression.

No emotion.

Grace suddenly understood why people whispered his name.

He wasn't frightening because he shouted.

He was frightening because he never needed to.

Finally he spoke.

"You protected my mother."

Grace blinked.

"...your mother?"

Margaret reached for Grace's hand.

"This brave young woman saved me."

Dominic nodded once.

"I don't forget kindness."

Then he turned toward Vivian Whitmore.

The temperature in the ballroom seemed to drop.

"You raised your hand."

Vivian laughed nervously.

"It was nothing."

"No."

Dominic answered.

"It was everything."

Nobody breathed.

May you like

For the first time in years...

Vivian Whitmore looked afraid.
