Chapter 2: The Man at Table Seven

Chapter 2: The Man at Table Seven

At Table Seven sat an elderly gentleman who had spent most of the evening eating alone.

Simple navy suit.

Silver hair.

No entourage.

No display of wealth.

Most guests hadn't recognized him.

But Paul Mercer had.

And suddenly his face turned white.

The old man slowly rose from his chair.

Every employee in the restaurant stood straighter.

Every manager looked terrified.

Because the man walking toward them wasn't just another customer.

He was Arthur Marlowe.

The founder of The Grand Marlowe.

The owner of the entire restaurant group.

And one of the most respected businessmen in the state.

Vivian's confidence flickered.

"Mr. Marlowe."

Arthur nodded politely.

Then he looked at Emma.

Not Vivian.

Not Richard.

Emma.

"I've been watching all evening."

The restaurant became so quiet that glasses stopped clinking.

Arthur continued.

"You apologized when you weren't wrong."

Emma stayed silent.

"You remained professional while being insulted."

Another pause.

"And when pressured to humiliate yourself, you refused."

He smiled slightly.

"Good."

Vivian stepped forward.

"Mr. Marlowe, with all due respect, this employee has been disrespectful."

Arthur turned toward her.

For the first time, his smile vanished.

"Disrespectful?"

The word hung in the air.

Then Arthur pointed toward the spoon.

"The only disrespect I witnessed tonight came from the woman who threw it."

Several guests immediately looked away.

Vivian's face reddened.

Arthur wasn't finished.

"I built this company fifty years ago."

His voice grew stronger.

"I taught every manager one rule."

He looked around the room.

"Employees are not servants."

His eyes settled on Emma.

"They are people."

A wave of realization spread across the restaurant.

Arthur had seen everything.

Every insult.

Every command.

Every humiliation.

And he was furious.

Vivian suddenly understood something terrifying.

Money could buy influence.

May you like

But there was always someone richer.

And tonight, that someone was standing right in front of her.
