Chapter 2: The Collapse

At 3:12 a.m., Richard’s attorney called.

At 3:14, the Donovan Foundation emergency board members began receiving legal notices.

At 3:18, Sabrina Cole’s financial accounts were frozen under a pending investigation.

And at 3:22, Richard looked at Clara like he was seeing her for the first time in his life.

“What did you do?” His voice was lower now. Controlled—but barely.

Clara’s hands trembled slightly, but her voice did not.

“I protected my child.”

“That’s my child too.”

For the first time, something sharp passed through her expression.

“No,” she said softly. “A father doesn’t build a second life before the first one is even born.”

Richard stepped closer. “You’re destroying everything.”

Clara didn’t move back.

“You did that,” she replied.

The silence after that was absolute.

Then Richard tried again, softer this time. A different tactic.

“Clara… we can fix this. I made mistakes, but we can—”

“Stop,” she said.

Just that.

One word.

But it ended the performance.

She picked up the envelope again and placed it into his hand.

Inside was not just the letter.

It was a separation filing.

Signed.

Filed.

Finalized in intent, if not yet in court.

Richard stared at it.

“You planned this.”

Clara nodded once.

“I started planning it the day I stopped crying.”

Something in him broke—but it wasn’t redemption. It was control slipping.

“You think you can take everything and just walk away?” he said, voice rising now.

Clara looked at him calmly.

“No,” she said. “I think I already did.”

The elevator dinged softly in the distance.

Security.

Her attorney.

The beginning of consequences arriving in real time.

Richard looked around the penthouse suddenly like it was unfamiliar territory.
