Chapter 1 - The Locked Ballroom

The steel barrier finished dropping behind Gavin Crowe with a sound that seemed to shake the crystal chandeliers.

For several seconds, nobody inside the ballroom moved.

Gavin stared at me as if he were seeing my face for the first time.

His friends were no longer laughing.

The champagne glass in Brandon Keller’s hand trembled against his fingers.

A woman near the orchestra whispered that someone should call the police.

I almost smiled.

“They’ve already been called.”

Gavin’s eyes narrowed.

“You think this scares me?”

His voice was louder than it needed to be.

That was the first sign that it did.

I wiped the remaining blood from my lip.

“No, Gavin.”

“I think what comes next scares you.”

Four members of the estate security team stepped away from the walls.

They had been standing there all evening.

Gavin had simply never understood who they answered to.

Their commander, Marcus Reed, stopped beside me.

“Ma’am.”

The single word changed the temperature in the room.

Several guests looked from Marcus to me.

Then back again.

Gavin laughed weakly.

“You work for the Crowes.”

Marcus did not look at him.

“No, sir.”

Gavin’s father, Harrison Crowe, finally pushed through the crowd.

He was sixty-two, silver-haired, perfectly dressed, and accustomed to having rooms become quiet when he entered them.

Tonight, the room was already silent.

He looked at the barriers.

Then at Marcus.

Then at me.

“What exactly is the meaning of this?”

I reached into my purse.

Gavin flinched.

I pulled out my phone.

Nothing more.

“The meaning is evidence preservation.”

Harrison’s expression hardened.

“You assaulted my son’s reputation in front of three hundred people.”

I looked at the bruise reflected faintly in the black screen of my phone.

“Your son assaulted me in front of three hundred people.”

Nobody spoke.

Harrison turned toward the guests.

“This woman is confused.”

There it was.

The strategy.

Not denial.

Discrediting.

I had expected it.

I tapped the screen.

The ballroom’s giant presentation wall came alive.

The charity logo disappeared.

Security footage replaced it.

A camera angle from thirty minutes earlier showed Gavin grabbing my arm.

Another showed him blocking me near the marble corridor.

A third showed him shoving me against the wall.

Gasps traveled through the room.

Gavin went pale.

Harrison did not.

That frightened me more.

He simply watched.

Calculating.

Then Marcus leaned close to me.

“We found the missing camera archive.”

My pulse changed.

“Where?”

“Private office upstairs.”

I looked toward Harrison.

For the first time, something moved behind his eyes.

Not anger.

Fear.

Marcus continued quietly.

“There’s more than tonight on those drives.”

Harrison heard him.

I knew because his hand slowly curled into a fist.

Gavin took one step backward.

“What drives?”

Nobody answered him.

I stared at Harrison Crowe.

Suddenly, this night was no longer about what his son had done to me.

It was about what this family had been hiding before I ever walked into the ballroom.

Then every screen in the room went black.

And somewhere above us, an alarm began to ring.
