Chapter 3: After the Glass Shattered

Chapter 3: After the Glass Shattered

Outside, Boston air was cold enough to feel like clarity.

The city lights reflected off wet pavement as if nothing inside the building had changed the world at all.

But everything had.

My phone buzzed once.

A final notification:

“SYSTEMS FULLY RESTORED. ETHICAL OVERSIGHT PROTOCOLS RE-ENGAGED.”

I exhaled slowly.

Not relief.

Not revenge.

Something quieter.

Resolution.

Behind me, the ballroom doors opened briefly.

Preston Vale stepped out alone.

No cameras now.

No audience.

Just him.

He looked smaller than the man everyone had applauded hours earlier.

“I didn’t know,” he said.

I turned slightly.

“That was the problem,” I replied.

A long silence passed between us.

Then I placed the broken glasses on a nearby ledge.

I didn’t need them anymore.

Not because I could see better.

But because I finally wasn’t being forced to look through someone else’s version of me.

Preston swallowed hard.

“What happens now?”

I looked at the city one last time.

Hospitals still running.

Patients still being treated.

Systems still alive—just no longer owned by ego.

“Now,” I said, “you learn what it means to work inside something you don’t control.”

I walked away without waiting for his answer.

And for the first time that night, no one tried to stop me.
