Chapter 16 - Claire Wakes

Chaos consumed the ballroom.

Guests moved toward exits.

Reporters shouted over one another.

Federal agents surrounded Margaret and Reed.

Margaret did not resist.

She stood beneath the stage lights with her hands folded calmly.

"You cannot prove I know where she is," she told Ethan.

"You just proved you know she's in danger."

"Concern is not guilt."

Ethan hated how quickly she could turn language into armor.

An agent informed Margaret she was being detained for questioning, not yet arrested.

Reed demanded counsel.

Maya appeared beside Ethan.

"The live feed had metadata."

"Where?"

"They're tracing it."

Ethan looked toward the black screens.

"Claire was awake."

The words barely came out.

Maya squeezed his arm.

"Yes."

"She was awake."

For the first time since the hospital, hope hurt more than fear.

Technicians traced the feed through three relays.

The final transmission originated from a commercial building in South Boston.

Police raided it.

They found an empty photography studio.

A chair.

Medical tape.

A portable monitor.

No Claire.

But the camera had been left behind.

It contained thirty seconds of footage recorded before the live feed.

Claire sat alone while someone adjusted the lights.

Her eyes moved slowly around the room.

She appeared sedated but conscious.

Then she looked directly toward the camera operator.

"Martin."

Ethan leaned closer to the screen.

Reed's voice answered from off camera.

"Don't make this harder."

Claire gave a faint smile.

"You people keep saying that right before making everything worse."

Even drugged and injured, she sounded like Claire.

Ethan almost laughed.

Reed stepped partially into frame.

"Ethan has evidence that can destroy dozens of innocent people."

"No."

Claire's voice was weak but clear.

"The guilty people always hide behind the innocent ones."

Reed crouched beside her.

"Margaret can still protect your husband."

"From Margaret?"

Reed looked away.

Claire noticed.

"You're scared of her too."

The footage ended.

Maya looked at Ethan.

"Claire is trying to turn him."

"She always was better at interviews."

At 1:12 a.m., Reed asked to speak with prosecutors.

Margaret's face changed when she heard.

It was small.

But Ethan saw it.

Reed had spent thirty years protecting her.

Now Claire had put one sentence into his head.

You're scared of her too.

After the ballroom emptied, workers found Claire's missing wedding ring taped beneath the stage podium.

No one knew how it got there.

A camera later showed Reed placing something under the podium before guests arrived.

The ring was another message.

Margaret wanted Ethan to believe Claire had been physically close to the gala and could be moved anywhere.

Instead, the ring became evidence tying Reed directly to Claire's personal property after her abduction.

Reed stared at the photograph during questioning.

For the first time, he seemed to understand that every clever gesture Margaret requested could also become a count in an indictment.

Reed negotiated for hours.

He admitted arranging Claire's removal from St. Vincent.

He claimed Margaret ordered it.

Margaret denied everything.

Reed gave investigators the next location.

A warehouse near the harbor.

Police found evidence Claire had been there.

Again, she was gone.

Someone had moved her twenty minutes before the raid.

Reed looked genuinely shocked.

"Only Voss knew the backup location."

"Where is Voss?" Maya asked.

Reed's face went pale.

"I thought he was with Claire."

Voss had stopped answering his phone.

Margaret smiled from the other side of the interview room glass.

That smile terrified Ethan.

Reed had betrayed her.

But Margaret still believed she controlled the board.

"There's another location," Reed said.

"Where?"

"Bellweather."

Ethan stared at him.

"Police searched Bellweather."

"Not below it."

Reed explained that the original convalescent home had underground service tunnels extending beyond the current property.

One tunnel led to a decommissioned ambulance garage beneath the hillside.

It had no modern address.

Voss used it for discreet transfers.

Federal agents moved immediately.

Ethan was ordered to stay behind.

This time he obeyed.

He sat in the hotel security office staring at Claire's frozen image.

At 2:06 a.m., Alvarez called.

"We found her."

Ethan could not speak.

"She's alive."

His eyes closed.

The room disappeared around him.

"Is she safe?"

Claire's recovery location after the rescue was kept secret even from several hospital executives.

Dr. Ortiz personally approved access.

Dana checked every badge twice.

The precautions looked excessive until Ethan remembered how Claire had disappeared the first time.

Trust would no longer be assumed simply because someone wore the correct uniform.

"Yes."

"Where is Voss?"

Alvarez hesitated.

"Gone."

"What does that mean?"

"He left Claire and ran before we arrived."

Ethan stood.

"I'm coming."

Alvarez's voice hardened.

"No."

"Why?"

"Because Voss left something for you."

When Claire's live image appeared on the ballroom screens, everyone saw fear.

Ethan saw calculation too.

Her eyes moved repeatedly toward the same corner.

Three times in six seconds.

Maya noticed it.

"She's signaling something."

The video analysts replayed the clip frame by frame.

In the corner of the image, a small red reflection pulsed.

Not a light.

A sign reflected in glass.

Only three letters were visible.

UTO.

An analyst searched businesses near known Ashcroft properties.

South Boston Auto Storage appeared within minutes.

That clue helped locate the photography studio used for the broadcast.

Claire had been drugged, injured, and surrounded by people who controlled the room.

She still found a reflection and used her eyes to point at it.

Ethan watched the footage again.

"She knew we'd look."

Maya nodded.

"She knew you would."

That distinction landed softly.

Claire's letter said she had not trusted Ethan enough before.

Now, somewhere between Bellweather and the live feed, she had chosen to trust that he would notice.

He did not know whether he deserved that yet.

He only knew he would not waste it.

Later, when Reed began negotiating, Maya used the footage differently.

She showed him Claire's face when she said he was afraid of Margaret.

"She saw you," Maya told him.

Reed looked away.

"She was manipulated."

"No.

She identified the one thing you've spent thirty years refusing to say."

Reed's hands trembled.

Maya leaned closer.

"Margaret cannot protect you if she decides you are the easiest person to sacrifice."

That was when Reed asked for a prosecutor.

Claire had turned a hostage video into leverage against her captor.

"What?"

"A note."

Ethan felt the hope drain from him.

"What does it say?"

May you like

Alvarez read it aloud.

MARGARET IS NOT THE LAST ONE.
