Chapter 1: The Experts Who Could Not Answer

Chapter 1: The Experts Who Could Not Answer

No one moved.

The silence Eleanor had created became heavier than the orchestra, heavier than the crystal chandeliers suspended above the ballroom.

Then Arthur Bell cleared his throat.

"If Mrs. Vail has asked who is qualified to speak about design..." he said slowly, "...then perhaps we should begin with facts."

He approached Hannah.

Not as a judge.

As a student.

Without touching the gown, he knelt beside the hem.

His eyes widened.

"My God..."

He looked toward the audience.

"Do any of you recognize this finishing?"

No one answered.

Arthur smiled sadly.

"I didn't think so."

He pointed toward the nearly invisible stitches hidden beneath the embroidery.

"These are invisible tension-lock stitches."

"They cannot be reproduced by machine."

"They require thousands of hours of hand control."

Another pause.

"And I have only ever seen them in one collection."

His voice dropped to a whisper.

"The House of Vail."

Gasps rippled across the ballroom.

Savannah Pierce stepped closer.

She had spent twenty years reviewing couture collections across Europe.

She had interviewed legendary designers.

She had believed herself impossible to surprise.

Yet now her hands were shaking.

She examined the collar.

The cuffs.

The lining.

Every detail confirmed what Arthur had already realized.

She slowly removed the press badge hanging around her neck.

Then, in front of every guest...

She bowed.

Not dramatically.

Simply.

Respectfully.

"I owe you an apology, Mrs. Vail."

"I reviewed your final collection twenty-three years ago."

"I called it 'too quiet for modern fashion.'"

Her voice cracked.

"I finally understand..."

"It wasn't quiet."

"We simply weren't listening."

Across the ballroom, whispers turned into stunned silence.

The guests who had mocked Hannah only minutes before now avoided meeting her eyes.

For the first time that evening...

Embarrassment had changed sides.
