Chapter 2: Choosing Herself

Chapter 2: Choosing Herself

Several weeks passed.

Emma returned to the architectural firm where she had worked before anyone knew her family name.

She refused special treatment.

She arrived early.

Stayed late.

Worked harder than everyone else.

Her coworkers slowly realized something unexpected.

Emma had never hidden her wealth out of arrogance.

She had hidden it because she wanted every achievement to belong to her.

One afternoon, Ethan appeared outside her office.

He looked exhausted.

The confidence that once attracted Emma had disappeared.

"I've been waiting for five hours."

"I know."

"You knew?"

"I saw you."

Emma calmly packed her laptop.

"I needed to decide whether I wanted to hear what you had to say."

"And?"

"I'll listen."

They walked through a nearby park.

"I was afraid," Ethan admitted.

"My family has controlled every decision I've ever made."

"I know."

"I thought if I stayed quiet, things would calm down."

Emma smiled sadly.

"Silence doesn't calm cruelty."

"It protects it."

Ethan lowered his head.

"I've resigned from my father's company."

Emma stopped walking.

"You did?"

"I realized I've spent my entire life borrowing other people's courage."

A long silence followed.

Finally he asked,

"Can we try again?"

Emma looked into his eyes.

For the first time...

She saw honesty.

But honesty had arrived too late.

"I forgive you."

Hope flashed across Ethan's face.

Then Emma continued.

"But forgiveness isn't the same as another chance."

She handed back the engagement ring he had once given her.

"I'll always appreciate what we had."

"But I deserve someone who stands beside me the first time."

Not after losing me.

She walked away.

Ethan never tried to stop her.

Because he finally understood that real love is proven in moments that cannot be repeated.
