Chapter 1: The Truth Behind the Lie

Chapter 1: The Truth Behind the Lie

Michael stood frozen in the hospital hallway.

His daughter?

The words echoed through his mind like thunder.

"No..." he whispered. "That's impossible."

His father lowered his head.

"I wish it were."

Michael grabbed the old man's shoulders.

"Explain. Right now."

Before the old man could answer, a nurse rushed out of the emergency room.

"Doctor Michael! We need you!"

Michael looked toward the doors where the little girl had disappeared.

Then back at his father.

"This isn't over."

He hurried inside.

For the next two hours, Michael fought to save the child whose existence had just shattered everything he believed.

When the operation was finally over, he stepped into the waiting area.

His father was still there.

Waiting.

Praying.

Michael sat beside him.

"Tell me everything."

The old man's eyes filled with guilt.

"Six years ago, after Emily disappeared, she came back to town."

Michael's heart nearly stopped.

"Emily was alive?"

The old man nodded.

"She was pregnant. Very sick. She told me she had been diagnosed with a rare heart condition."

Michael clenched his fists.

"Why didn't she contact me?"

"Because she thought she was dying."

The old man's voice trembled.

"She believed you deserved a better future than watching her fade away."

Michael closed his eyes.

The pain was unbearable.

"Then what happened?"

"She gave birth to a baby girl."

Tears rolled down the old man's cheeks.

"And three months later... Emily died."

Michael felt as if the ground had vanished beneath him.

The woman he had loved.

Gone.

All those years.

Without even a goodbye.

The old man continued.

"Before she died, she begged me to keep the child safe."

Michael's voice cracked.

"And you never told me?"

The old man looked away.

"Because I was afraid."

"Afraid of what?"

"Afraid you'd hate me for hiding the truth."

Michael laughed bitterly.

"I do."

The words cut deeper than any knife.

The old man lowered his head.

He didn't argue.

Because he knew he deserved them.

And for the first time in years, silence settled between father and son.

Heavy.

Painful.

Unforgiving.

Then a nurse appeared.

"The little girl is awake."

Everything else suddenly became unimportant.

Michael ran.

And for the first time in his life...
