Chapter 2: The Last Seed

Chapter 2: The Last Seed
One spring afternoon, Evelyn showed Leo a small wooden box hidden beneath a shelf.
Inside lay a single seed.
It looked ordinary.
Tiny.
Brown.
Fragile.
But Evelyn handled it like treasure.
"This seed is over one hundred years old," she explained.
"It survived droughts, floods, and wars."
Leo's eyes widened.
"Why haven't you planted it?"
Evelyn smiled sadly.
"Because I was waiting for the right person."
Years passed.
Leo grew taller.
Stronger.
Kinder.
The greenhouse became his home.
Then one winter morning, Evelyn didn't come downstairs.
The doctors said her heart was tired.
Very tired.
As snow fell outside the hospital window, she placed the wooden box into Leo's hands.
"The storm took many things from you," she whispered.
"But it didn't take your heart."
Tears filled Leo's eyes.
"I don't want to lose you too."
Evelyn squeezed his hand.
"You won't."
She smiled.
"Every time something grows because of your kindness, I'll be there."
That night, Evelyn passed away peacefully.
Leo felt the old loneliness return.
The same darkness.
The same emptiness.
But this time he had something he hadn't possessed as a frightened ten-year-old boy.
May you like
A purpose.
And in his pocket rested the last seed.
