Then chaos broke out in whispers.
“Is that… her phone?”
“No, that’s the tracker sound.”
“She said it was in the purse…”
Grandma clutched the designer handbag tighter against her chest like it might burn her skin. Her knuckles went white. For the first time that evening, her voice didn’t carry its usual authority.
“That’s impossible,” she snapped. “I checked this purse a dozen times.”
But Sophie didn’t look surprised. She only stepped back slightly, still tearful, still shaking—but no longer afraid.
Her father frowned. “Mom… what did you lose exactly?”
Grandma hesitated.
That hesitation was enough.
Inside the purse, the beeping grew louder—steady, rhythmic, undeniable.
Someone in the family whispered, “Open it.”
