Chapter 10 - The Man Who Needed a Villain.

By sunset, every major network had footage of police carrying evidence boxes out of the Halcyon Hotel.

The Vale Foundation released a statement calling the search "an unfortunate overreaction based on misleading allegations."

Conrad Vale appeared nowhere in public.

Julian Vale disappeared entirely.

His attorneys claimed they did not know where he was.

Mara did not believe them.

Detective Ortiz moved Lily and Mrs. Alvarez to a protected location and refused to tell Mara the address until she stopped arguing.

"You are still a target," Ortiz said.

"So is she."

"Which is why she is somewhere you don't know."

"That sentence is designed to make me furious."

"Good."

"Why good?"

"Angry people remember instructions."

Mara spent the evening with Owen and Camille in a borrowed office above Camille's law firm.

They covered one wall with a timeline.

Six years of Nora's records sat beside eighteen months of Vesper Sapphire insurance documents.

The pattern was now visible.

The real sapphire had been quietly replaced with a commissioned replica.

The original remained insured under the foundation's policy.

The gala "theft" created a public loss event that would trigger a claim.

Lily's accusation created a convenient suspect.

The missing camera footage hid the mechanics.

The altered dress made the planted replica look discovered rather than placed.

The only part that had gone wrong was Mara pointing toward the camera before everyone could be frightened into silence.

Owen pinned a photograph of the broken chair to the wall.

"This may be the most expensive tantrum in New York history."

Camille looked at him.

"Don't joke about it in front of a jury."

"I don't joke in court."

"You look like you joke in court."

Mara barely heard them.

She was staring at Julian's face in a still image from the gala.

He had looked furious when she challenged him.

He had looked terrified when she pointed at the camera.

Now she wondered what exactly he had been afraid the camera would reveal.

Not the chair.

A man like Julian could apologize for a chair.

Not the accusation.

His lawyers could call that a mistake.

He had been afraid of the sequence.

The message from Conrad.

The planned search.

The connection to Celeste.

Mara called Lily before the next round of work began.

Mrs. Alvarez answered first and demanded proof that Mara was actually Mara.

After three questions only family would know, she handed over the phone.

"Are you still in trouble?" Lily asked.

"Less than this morning."

"That's not a number."

"About a four out of ten."

"Yesterday was what?"

"Twelve."

Lily accepted that.

Then her voice became quieter.

"Did the camera prove I didn't steal it?"

"Yes."

"All the way?"

"All the way."

Mara heard Lily exhale.

"Can I see it?"

Mara hesitated.

"Not yet."

"Why?"

"Because I don't want you to have to watch someone put that thing in your pocket unless you decide you need to."

Lily was silent.

"Okay."

Then she added, "But save it."

Mara looked at the wall of evidence.

"It's saved."

"Good."

That one word carried more relief than any legal victory Mara had heard all day.

She ended the call with renewed anger at everyone who had treated the child's certainty as less valuable than Julian's confidence.

Mara's phone buzzed.

A text came from an unknown number.

COME ALONE IF YOU WANT CELESTE ALIVE.

Below it was an address in Brooklyn.

Owen saw Mara's face.

"No."

"I didn't say anything."

"Your face did."

"Everyone needs to stop reading my face."

Camille held out her hand.

"Give me the phone."

Mara showed them the message.

Owen immediately began checking the number.

Camille called Ortiz.

The detective answered with one sentence.

"Do not go there."

"You haven't heard the address."

"I heard Camille say your name in the tone lawyers use when clients are about to be stupid."

"The message says Celeste is alive."

"It also says come alone, which is how bad messages become worse funerals."

Mara looked at the address.

"Can you trace it?"

"Send it."

The address belonged to an abandoned photography studio scheduled for demolition.

Ortiz arranged surveillance around the building.

Mara was ordered to remain six blocks away in an unmarked car.

She hated every second.

At 10:18 p.m., the side door of the studio opened.

A man in a dark coat stepped outside.

It was Julian.

He stood under a broken streetlamp and looked directly toward the unmarked police van hidden down the block.

Then he raised both hands.

Ortiz swore.

"He knows we're here."

Julian pulled out his phone and called Mara.

"I told you to come alone."

"You texted a woman whose niece you framed."

"I framed her because I was told she had something my father wanted."

Mara's grip tightened.

"That is not a defense."

"I know."

The answer surprised her.

Julian looked toward the van again.

"Tell Ortiz she can listen."

Mara glanced at the detective.

Ortiz activated the recorder.

"I'm listening," she said.

Julian laughed softly.

"Of course you are."

Mara's voice hardened.

"Where is Celeste?"

"Safe for the moment."

"Where?"

"Not until I get an agreement."

Camille leaned toward the phone.

"You are not negotiating immunity through my client."

Julian recognized her voice.

"Camille Brooks."

"Unfortunately for you."

"I want federal protection for Celeste."

Ortiz frowned.

"From what?"

"My father."

"And for you?"

Julian looked through the studio window.

"I want a lawyer before I answer that."

Mara's anger flared.

"You smashed a chair in front of Lily."

"I know."

"You pointed at a child and called her a thief."

"I know."

"You knew the accusation was false."

Julian closed his eyes.

"I knew the theft was staged."

The words hung in the air.

Ortiz motioned for Mara to keep him talking.

"Did you know the brooch was a replica?"

"Yes."

"Did you know Celeste would plant it on Lily?"

"Yes."

Mara's voice shook despite her effort to control it.

"Then why?"

Julian opened his eyes.

"Because my father told me Nora had hidden a ledger key with her daughter."

"So you used police and hotel security to search an eleven-year-old."

"Yes."

No excuse.

No denial.

The admission somehow made Mara angrier.

"Did you know your father caused Nora's death?"

Julian's expression changed.

"I didn't know that then."

"When did you know?"

"Tonight."

"What happened tonight?"

Julian glanced behind him.

"I found a file in his private office."

"What file?"

"Nora Bennett."

Mara stopped breathing.

"What's in it?"

"Expense approvals, surveillance reports, medical records, school schedules."

"Whose school schedule?"

Julian looked directly toward the car even though he could not see Mara through the tinted glass.

"Lily's."

The air left Mara's lungs.

Conrad had been tracking Lily for years.

Julian continued.

"He never knew where Nora put the missing ledger pages."

"What pages?"

"The names in red are only the first layer."

"What is the second?"

"The people paying."

Mara thought of Nora's note.

NOT DONORS.

BUYERS.

"Buying what?"

Julian's face hardened.

"Favors."

"Be specific."

"Permits."

"What else?"

"Hospital contracts."

"What else?"

"Judicial pressure."

Camille went still.

Julian continued.

"Foundation gifts moved clean money into public projects."

"And dirty money?"

"Moved back through consultants, brokers, and shell firms."

Mara thought of Blue Meridian Partners.

"Where is the real sapphire?"

Julian laughed without humor.

"Gone."

"Sold?"

"Eighteen months ago."

"To whom?"

"A private collector in Geneva through a broker."

"And the insurance claim?"

"Would have paid the foundation for an object it already sold."

Ortiz whispered, "Insurance fraud."

Julian heard her.

"Insurance fraud is the smallest crime in that building."

Mara stared at him through the windshield.

"Where is Celeste?"

"She has the access card I gave her."

"To what?"

"My mother's old apartment at the Vale Conservatory."

"Why there?"

"My father sealed it after she died."

"What does that have to do with Celeste?"

Julian hesitated.

"Because my mother knew Nora."

Mara felt another piece move into place.

"Your mother died before my sister."

"Eight months before."

"Cancer."

"That's what my father told everyone."

Mara's skin went cold.

Julian looked toward the dark studio.

"Celeste found letters between them."

"Letters about what?"

"The donor list."

A car engine roared somewhere behind the studio.

Julian turned sharply.

Ortiz shouted into her radio.

The rear door of the building burst open.

Julian ran back inside.

Officers moved from both ends of the block.

Mara heard tires squeal.

A black SUV shot from the alley and disappeared through a construction gate before police could close the street.

Ortiz ordered units after it.

Mara stared at the studio door.

Julian reappeared thirty seconds later with blood on his sleeve from a cut across his forearm.

He was alone.

He dropped to his knees and raised his hands.

"My father's done waiting," he said.

Then he looked directly at Mara's car.
