Chapter 1: The Living Room Fell Silent
The television kept playing.
No one noticed that Ethan had stepped into the living room until he picked up the remote and switched it off.
The room fell into complete silence.
His mother looked up first.
"What are you doing? We were watching that."
Ethan didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he looked around the room.
His younger brother was lazily scrolling through social media.
His aunt was eating fruit from a bowl that now sat empty on the coffee table.
His cousin had left dirty plates scattered across every surface.
Then he asked one simple question.
"Who made this mess?"
No one spoke.
Finally his mother shrugged.
"We all ate together."
"And who cleaned?"
Again, silence.
Ethan nodded slowly.
"So my wife did."
His mother's expression hardened.
"She's the woman of the house. Besides, she's home all day while you're working."
The sentence landed like a slap.
Ethan laughed quietly—not because anything was funny, but because he couldn't believe what he had just heard.
"Home all day?"
He walked toward the kitchen and gently placed a hand on Claire's shoulder.
"This woman has been carrying our son for eight months."
He pointed toward her swollen ankles.
"She can barely stand."
Then he looked back at his family.
"And somehow every plate, every pan, every cup became her responsibility?"
His aunt rolled her eyes.
"Pregnancy isn't an illness. Women have done this for generations."
Claire quickly wiped away her tears.
"It's okay. Please don't argue because of me."
Ethan squeezed her hand.
"No."
His voice remained calm.
"This argument isn't because of you."
"It's because everyone in this house forgot how to treat another human being."
Without another word, he walked into the kitchen, rolled up his sleeves, and began washing every remaining dish himself.
Claire stared at him.
The relatives stared even harder.

No one had expected the son they always controlled to choose his wife over them.
But Ethan had already made his decision.
