Chapter 1: The Secret Behind the Christmas List

Chapter 1: The Secret Behind the Christmas List
Vanessa staggered backward.
The color drained from her face.
"What are you talking about?" she demanded. "You can't just accuse me in front of everyone."
Chief Daniel Carter didn't raise his voice.
He didn't need to.
The entire mall was already listening.
Emily stood silently beside Santa's chair, tears still rolling down her cheeks.
Daniel knelt beside her.
"Emily," he said gently, "would you like to sit with Mrs. Thompson for a few minutes?"
An older woman from Child Protective Services stepped forward.
Emily looked nervous.
Then she glanced at her mother.
The little girl's body immediately tensed.
Daniel noticed.
Everyone noticed.
Slowly, Emily nodded and took Mrs. Thompson's hand.
Vanessa stepped forward.
"She's my daughter. You're not taking her anywhere."
Daniel held up a hand.
"Actually, ma'am, we are."
The crowd gasped.
Vanessa's voice rose.
"This is insane!"
Daniel opened a small folder.
Inside were photographs.
School reports.
Witness statements.
Medical records.
Evidence gathered over months.
"We received reports from Emily's teachers."
Vanessa froze.
"We interviewed neighbors."
Her jaw tightened.
"We reviewed multiple hospital visits."
The mall had become completely silent.
Then Daniel pulled out one final piece of paper.
A letter.
Folded neatly.
Covered in childish handwriting.
Emily's Christmas letter to Santa.
Daniel unfolded it carefully.
The little girl had written:
"Dear Santa, I don't want toys this year."
Several shoppers immediately covered their mouths.
"I just want Mommy to stop being angry at me."
Vanessa looked like she'd been punched.
"I try really hard to be good."
"Maybe if I become perfect, she will love me again."
A woman in the crowd began crying.
Daniel folded the letter.
His eyes never left Vanessa.
"That letter is why we're here today."
For the first time, Vanessa had no response.
