Chapter 1 - The Second Shadow

The ambulance doors slammed shut behind Sophie while I sat beside her, pressing a clean hospital towel against the bandage wrapped around her head.

Her fingers were locked around mine.

She had stopped crying.

That frightened me more than the blood had.

Eight-year-olds were supposed to cry after something like this.

They were supposed to ask questions.

They were supposed to demand ice cream after the doctor finished stitching the wound.

Sophie only stared at the ceiling.

“Mommy?”

I leaned closer.

“I’m right here.”

“Is Uncle Preston going to jail?”

I swallowed.

“I don’t know yet.”

She looked at me with exhausted eyes.

“Will Grandma be mad at me if he does?”

That question almost broke me.

Before I could answer, my phone vibrated.

The caller was Adrian Mills, head of security at the Whitmore Hotel.

I almost ignored it.

Then I remembered his expression when he had followed the paramedics through the ballroom.

He had looked disturbed.

Not surprised.

Disturbed.

I answered.

“Ms. Bennett, you need to come back as soon as your daughter is stable.”

My pulse quickened.

“You found the recording?”

“Yes.”

“Preston planted the phone.”

There was a pause.

“Yes.”

Relief should have washed over me.

Instead, Adrian continued.

“But that isn’t why I’m calling.”

I stared through the ambulance window at Chicago sliding past us.

“What else did you see?”

Another pause.

Longer this time.

“Your brother wasn’t acting alone.”

My fingers tightened around Sophie’s hand.

“Who helped him?”

“I would rather show you the footage.”

“Tell me.”

“Ms. Bennett—”

“Tell me his name.”

The silence that followed felt endless.

Finally, Adrian spoke.

“It was Nathan.”

Everything inside me went cold.

Nathan.

My husband.

Sophie’s father.

The man who had been sitting beside me during the entire reception.

The man who had put one arm around my shoulders when Preston accused our daughter of stealing.

The man who had whispered, “We’ll figure this out.”

I slowly turned toward Sophie.

She was watching me.

“What happened?”

“Nothing.”

The lie came automatically.

But nothing about my life felt real anymore.

Adrian continued.

“The camera shows Nathan standing behind Sophie’s chair eleven minutes before Preston announced the phone was missing.”

My stomach twisted.

“He placed something inside her jacket.”

“The phone?”

“No.”

That confused me.

“Then what?”

“A small velvet jewelry box.”

I stopped breathing.

Adrian lowered his voice.

“We recovered it before hotel staff cleaned the ballroom.”

“What was inside?”

“A diamond bracelet belonging to the bride.”

I closed my eyes.

One stolen object could be dismissed as a misunderstanding.

Two would establish a pattern.

Preston hadn’t simply wanted Sophie accused of stealing his phone.

Nathan had been preparing to make his own daughter look like a thief twice in the same night.

“Why?”

“I don’t know.”

Neither did I.

But one horrible possibility entered my mind.

Nathan and I had been fighting for months.

Mostly about money.

Mostly about the trust my grandfather had left Sophie.

A trust worth nearly six million dollars.

Nathan had recently asked whether I would ever consider letting him manage it.

I had said no.

He had laughed.

He had told me I worried too much.

Now the same man had secretly planted stolen jewelry inside our daughter’s jacket.

My voice trembled.

“Save every second of that footage.”

“We already made three secure copies.”

“Don’t give anything to my family.”

“We won’t.”

I looked at Sophie again.

She was still holding my hand.

Still trusting me.

Still trusting her father.

The ambulance turned toward the emergency entrance.

Then another thought struck me.

“Nathan left the hotel with us.”

“Yes.”

“He knows where we’re going.”

Adrian became silent.

My blood ran cold.

I looked through the rear window.

A familiar black Mercedes had been following the ambulance for the last four blocks.

Nathan’s car.

And suddenly I understood something terrifying.

May you like

He wasn’t coming to the hospital because he was worried about Sophie.

He was coming because he didn’t know how much I knew.
