Chapter 4 - The Family Pact.

Robert Hale arrived at the hospital wearing a charcoal suit and the expression of a man entering a board meeting he expected to control.
He was sixty-three, silver-haired, disciplined, and famous within the family for never raising his voice.
Lucas had feared that calm more as a child than he feared shouting from anyone else.
"How is Victoria?" Robert asked.
"Alive."
The answer made Robert flinch, but only slightly.
Lucas noticed.
"Why did you access my security system?"
Robert's face hardened.
"Where did you hear that?"
"From the detective investigating my wife's assault."
Robert glanced toward the nurses' station.
"We should not discuss this here."
"We are discussing it here."
Lucas had spent his life adapting to his father's rules.
That morning, the rules stopped mattering.
Robert said the family office had installed the original security package and retained administrative access for maintenance.
He claimed he had logged in because Eleanor told him there was an emergency at the house.
"At eleven forty-two?"
"Approximately."
"Victoria was already in the ambulance by then."
Robert's jaw tightened.
"I wanted to see whether the cameras captured anything useful."
"Then why is the hub missing?"
Robert looked directly at Lucas.
"I did not remove it."
The denial was calm and immediate.
Lucas almost believed him.
Then Eleanor stepped off the elevator behind Robert.
She carried a leather handbag and a worried expression that arrived too late to feel natural.
"Lucas, please."
He looked at both parents and understood that they had spoken before coming.
"Did either of you know Amber was going to our house?"
Eleanor's eyes moved toward Robert.
That glance was answer enough.
"She called me this morning," Eleanor admitted.
"Why?"
"She was upset."
"About what?"
Eleanor lowered her voice.
"About Victoria."
Lucas felt something inside him become very still.
"What about Victoria?"
Robert stepped between them verbally before Eleanor could answer.
"There are financial irregularities at Hale Development."
Lucas stared.
He worked for the company but had stepped back from daily operations during Victoria's difficult pregnancy.
Robert continued.
"Someone has been moving money through project accounts and disguising the transfers as consulting expenses."
"What does that have to do with my wife?"
"Some approvals came from an account associated with her."
Lucas laughed once, without humor.
"Victoria does not have a company account."
"She has access through the family trust portal."
Lucas stopped laughing.
He had forgotten the trust portal because Victoria almost never used it.
Robert said auditors had flagged transactions totaling more than three hundred thousand dollars over six months.
Eleanor said Amber had discovered Victoria's name attached to one of the internal documents.
"So you sent my sister to confront my pregnant wife?"
"No," Eleanor said quickly.
"I told Amber to wait."
Lucas looked at Robert.
"And you?"
Robert did not answer fast enough.
"I told her I would handle it."
That was not the same as telling her to stay away.
Lucas stepped closer.
"Did you know about the seventy-eight thousand from our savings?"
Eleanor looked confused.
Robert did not.
Lucas saw the difference.
"You knew."
Robert's expression barely changed.
"I knew a transfer had occurred."
"From my wife's login."
"Yes."
"Why didn't you call me?"
Robert's answer came like a business principle.
"Because accusations without proof destroy families."
Lucas looked toward Victoria's room.
"Violence destroys them faster."
Detective Reyes entered the corridor at that moment and asked to speak with Robert privately.
Robert agreed, but before leaving he placed a hand on Lucas's shoulder.
"Do not make permanent decisions while you are angry."
Lucas removed the hand.
"Someone already made one."
Inside Victoria's room, Eleanor sat beside the bed and cried quietly.
Victoria watched her without comfort.
"Did you tell Amber I stole from you?" Victoria asked.
Eleanor wiped her eyes.
"I said there were questions."
"You knew how unstable she was."
"I didn't know she would hurt you."
Victoria looked at Lucas.
"She brought paperwork."
Lucas leaned closer.
Victoria remembered seeing copies of bank statements, company records, and a photograph clipped to the top.
"What photograph?" Eleanor asked.
Victoria's face tightened.
"Me with a man outside a medical building."
Lucas felt the room narrow.
"What man?"
"Dr. Nolan."
Lucas recognized the name as the maternal-fetal specialist who had consulted on Victoria's pregnancy months earlier.
Victoria explained that the photograph had been taken from across the street and cropped so the clinic sign was not visible.
Amber had waved it in her face and accused her of having an affair.
Eleanor looked genuinely startled.
"I never saw a photograph."
Lucas believed that part.
The door opened and Reyes signaled him into the hall.
She had just finished speaking with Robert.
The security company had provided a second detail.
Robert's administrator account had not merely viewed the camera system.
It had issued a command to disable cloud backup seven minutes before Victoria's phone began recording.
Robert denied sending that command.
The access log showed the login location as the Hale family office downtown.
Reyes was already requesting building security footage.
Lucas looked through the glass at his father standing at the far end of the corridor.
For the first time in his life, Robert Hale looked uncertain.
Then Lucas's phone buzzed with an email from the bank's fraud department.

The seventy-eight-thousand-dollar transfer had a recipient name attached after all.
