Chapter 15 - THE CONFESSION ON THE RECORDING -

The recording lasted twenty-seven minutes.
My father confronted Vivian about the shell companies.
She denied everything at first.
Then Arthur mentioned Lucas.
Her voice became cold.
“You always preferred Daniel.”
“I protected Lucas because you taught him that love must be purchased.”
“He understands loyalty.”
“He understands fear.”
My father told her that he had changed the trust.
He planned to contact federal investigators the following morning.
Vivian warned him that the company would collapse if the scandal became public.
Arthur refused to remain silent.
Near the end of the recording, a cup touched the desk.
My father asked why his tea tasted bitter.
Vivian did not answer.
The recorder captured his breathing becoming strained.
A chair scraped across the floor.
Then Dr. Mercer entered the room.
“You used too much,” he said.
My mother answered without panic.
“Then fix it.”
The final sound was Mercer calling my father’s name.
The recording ended.
Nathan sat in silence.
Mara covered her mouth.
Elena reached for my hand.
I felt no tears.
Only emptiness.
For three years, I had mourned a natural death.
Now I knew my father had spent his final moments understanding that the woman beside him had betrayed him.
The district attorney charged Vivian with murder, attempted murder, kidnapping, financial fraud, witness intimidation, and evidence tampering.
Dr. Mercer accepted a plea agreement in exchange for testimony.
Police found Rosa inside an unused rehabilitation facility owned by Meridian Wellness.
She had been locked inside a private room without access to a phone.
She was frightened and dehydrated, but alive.
When I visited her, she held my hands.
“I should have spoken sooner.”
“You were afraid.”
“Your father was afraid too.”
I looked at her.
“My father?”
“He knew Vivian would hurt you or Lucas if he exposed her.”
Rosa’s eyes filled with tears.
“He kept waiting for a way to save both sons.”
“He ran out of time.”
“Yes.”
She squeezed my fingers.
“But you have not.”
Lucas remained outside the country.
Federal investigators traced him to a hotel in Zurich.
The shell companies were registered under his name.
Without his testimony, he faced decades in prison.
I sent him the recording.
I did not add a message.
The next morning, he called Nathan.
May you like
He was ready to surrender.
He also claimed he possessed evidence that my mother had planned to cause Elena’s death during childbirth.
