Chapter 1: The Footage Never Lies

Chapter 1: The Footage Never Lies
The ballroom doors burst open just as the distant sirens stopped outside the Whitmore Hotel.
Two Chicago police officers hurried inside, followed closely by hotel security manager Daniel Ruiz.
"Who called 911?" one officer asked.
"I did," Evelyn answered, still holding Sophie tightly against her chest. Blood continued to drip onto her dress.
Preston stepped forward immediately.
"Officer, my niece stole my phone, and my sister is creating chaos at my wedding."
Before he could continue, Daniel interrupted.
"Sir... there's something you need to see."
Every eye turned toward the security manager.
"Our ballroom is monitored by six security cameras. One of them overlooks the entrance and the guest seating area."
Preston's face lost its color.
"I don't think that's necessary."
Daniel looked at him calmly.
"Actually... after witnessing a child being struck, it is necessary."
Minutes later, everyone gathered around the hotel's surveillance monitor.
The video began without sound.
Guests watched themselves entering the ballroom.
Sophie appeared, skipping happily beside her mother.
Then Preston walked past her chair.
He looked over both shoulders.
Reached into his tuxedo pocket.
Pulled out his titanium iPhone.
And quietly slipped it into the pocket of Sophie's little denim jacket.
The room froze.
No one spoke.
The recording continued.
Several minutes later...
Preston dramatically announced that his phone had been stolen.
He walked directly toward Sophie.
Reached into the same pocket...
And "found" the phone.
The evidence was undeniable.
Every guest had just watched the entire setup unfold.
Then another camera angle played.
It showed Preston ripping the heavy oak menu board from its stand...
Lifting it over his shoulder...
And swinging it directly into the side of an eight-year-old girl's head.
The officer stopped the video.
He slowly turned toward Preston.
"Sir..."
"You're under arrest."
For the first time in his life...

No one defended him.
Not even his parents.
