Chapter 16: Framed

Chapter 16: Framed

The news alert spread across America within minutes.

.

Every major television network interrupted its regular programming.

.

Every financial news channel carried the same headline.

.

Every social media platform exploded with speculation.

.

STERLING GLOBAL CEO ALEXANDER STERLING ACCUSED OF MASTERMINDING FATHER'S MURDER.

.

The accusations were detailed.

.

Convincing.

.

And completely false.

.

.

Inside the vault of the First National Bank of Boston, an uneasy silence settled over the room.

.

Emily looked from one face to another.

.

"This happened too quickly."

.

Daniel nodded.

.

"The story was prepared in advance."

.

"They were waiting."

.

Catherine's expression hardened.

.

"Someone knew we'd open the safety deposit box today."

.

Alexander folded Jonathan Cole's letter and carefully slipped it back into the envelope.

.

"They're trying to bury the truth before we can expose it."

.

.

Daniel refreshed the news feed.

.

His face darkened.

.

"It gets worse."

.

Alexander looked at him.

.

"What now?"

.

"The article includes what appears to be a copy of Edward Sterling's revised will."

.

Catherine frowned.

.

"Revised?"

.

Daniel handed her the phone.

.

"It leaves the entire company to Alexander."

.

"It claims the document was signed only forty-eight hours before Edward died."

.

Catherine studied the image carefully.

.

Then she shook her head.

.

"It's forged."

.

Alexander looked at the screen.

.

"My father's signature is close."

.

"But not perfect."

.

Catherine pointed toward the bottom of the document.

.

"The witness signatures."

.

Alexander leaned closer.

.

"They're fake?"

.

"No."

.

"They belonged to people who were already dead."

.

The room fell silent.

.

.

Emily quietly asked,

.

"If it's obviously fake..."

.

"...why would anyone believe it?"

.

Catherine answered immediately.

.

"Because most people won't examine it."

.

"They'll only read the headline."

.

Alexander sighed.

.

"By the time the truth comes out..."

.

"...my reputation will already be destroyed."

.

.

Outside the bank.

.

News vans had begun arriving.

.

Reporters crowded the front entrance.

.

Camera crews shouted questions at anyone wearing a business suit.

.

Someone had leaked Alexander's location.

.

Daniel looked through the security monitors.

.

"We're surrounded."

.

The bank president apologized.

.

"I'm terribly sorry."

.

"We never disclosed your visit."

.

Catherine believed him.

.

"The leak came from somewhere else."

.

.

Thousands of miles away.

.

Inside her federal detention cell, Victoria watched the news on a small television.

.

A slow smile spread across her face.

.

Richard Hale sat across from her.

.

"The media accepted the story."

.

Victoria nodded.

.

"They always do."

.

Richard looked uneasy.

.

"The forged will won't survive forensic analysis."

.

Victoria calmly picked up her teacup.

.

"It doesn't need to."

.

"It only needs to survive long enough."

.

Richard understood.

.

Public opinion moved faster than evidence.

.

Once doubt took root...

.

It became difficult to erase.

.

.

Back in Boston.

.

An FBI communications specialist hurried into the vault.

.

"Director Hayes is on the secure line."

.

Catherine accepted the phone.

.

"Hayes."

.

She listened for several moments without speaking.

.

Her expression became increasingly serious.

.

Finally, she answered.

.

"I understand."

.

She ended the call.

.

Alexander looked at her.

.

"What happened?"

.

Catherine took a deep breath.

.

"A federal judge has issued a temporary detention order."

.

Emily's eyes widened.

.

"For Alexander?"

.

Catherine nodded reluctantly.

.

"Until the allegations are reviewed."

.

Daniel slammed his hand against the table.

.

"This is insane."

.

"He hasn't even been questioned."

.

Catherine agreed.

.

"Someone has enormous influence."

.

.

Alexander remained surprisingly calm.

.

"If I run..."

.

"I'll look guilty."

.

Daniel shook his head.

.

"If you surrender..."

.

"...they'll bury you in legal procedures."

.

Emily stepped closer.

.

"They want you isolated."

.

"So you can't keep investigating."

.

Alexander looked at Jonathan Cole's journal.

.

"They're afraid of what's inside."

.

.

Sophia quietly walked into the room holding Mr. Buttons.

.

She looked up at Alexander.

.

"Daddy."

.

He knelt beside her.

.

"Yes, sweetheart?"

.

"Are the people on TV lying?"

.

Alexander smiled gently.

.

"They are."

.

Sophia hugged him tightly.

.

"My teacher says good people tell the truth."

.

Alexander kissed the top of her head.

.

"And she's right."

.

Emily watched them silently.

.

No television broadcast could erase what kind of father Alexander had become.

.

.

At FBI headquarters in Washington, D.C., another crisis was unfolding.

.

Director Michael Hayes entered the secure evidence room.

.

He personally examined Jonathan Cole's journal.

.

The photograph of Victoria beside Attorney General William Crawford lay on the table.

.

Hayes frowned.

.

He immediately requested Crawford's personnel file.

.

Minutes later...

.

A senior analyst rushed into the room.

.

"Director."

.

"You need to see this."

.

Hayes looked up.

.

"What is it?"

.

The analyst handed him a classified file.

.

William Crawford had resigned from the Department of Justice only six months earlier.

.

Official reason.

.

Retirement.

.

Unofficial reason.

.

Unknown.

.

Hayes turned another page.

.

His eyes widened.

.

"No..."

.

The final page contained a recent surveillance photograph.

.

William Crawford had secretly visited Victoria Sterling in prison.

.

Just three days ago.

.

.

Back at the Boston bank, federal marshals arrived.

.

Their leader approached Alexander respectfully.

.

"Mr. Sterling."

.

"We have a court order."

.

Alexander nodded calmly.

.

"I'll cooperate."

.

As he extended his hands...

.

A voice echoed through the vault.

.

"Stop."

.

Everyone turned.

.

A young federal prosecutor hurried toward them carrying a sealed court order.

.

She looked directly at the marshals.

.

"Judge Evelyn Monroe has just vacated the detention order."

.

The lead marshal frowned.

.

"On what grounds?"

.

The prosecutor handed him the document.

.

"Because the evidence used to obtain it was fabricated."

.

Alexander looked at Catherine.

.

"That was fast."

.

Catherine's expression remained thoughtful.

.

"Too fast."

.

She looked toward the prosecutor.

.

"I don't believe we've met."

.

The young woman smiled politely.

.

"I'm Assistant U.S. Attorney Olivia Grant."

.

She extended her hand.

.

"I'm here to help."

.

Catherine shook her hand.

.

But something felt wrong.

.

Very wrong.

.

As Olivia turned to leave...

.

Daniel noticed a small tattoo on the inside of her wrist.

.

A black circle.

.

Barely visible beneath her watch.

.

His heart skipped a beat.

.

She wasn't there to help them.

.

May you like

She was already inside the investigation.
