Chapter 5 - Morning Changed Everything
Anna woke to the smell of coffee.
For one hopeful second, she forgot where she was.
Then she saw the airport hotel curtains.
The suitcase.
The sleeping children.
Daniel.
He stood near the small desk in a white undershirt and uniform trousers.
His dress jacket hung over the chair.
Two cups of coffee sat beside a paper bag.
He looked almost domestic.
That image hurt in a different way.
“Morning.”
Anna pushed herself upright.
“What time is it?”
“Six fifteen.”
“You slept?”
“Some.”
“You?”
“Enough.”
Daniel handed her a cup.
“Decaf.”
She took it.
“You remembered.”
“I remember everything.”
Anna looked at him.
Daniel immediately realized what he had walked into.
“Poor choice of words.”
“Very.”
He smiled faintly.
The boys woke ten minutes later.
Caleb talked nonstop.
Noah remained quieter.
He watched Daniel constantly.
Whenever Daniel moved toward the door, Noah’s eyes followed.
Anna noticed.
Daniel noticed too.
At seven, another airline notification arrived.
The Denver flight would not depart until afternoon.
Anna stared at the screen.
Daniel sat across from her.
“You still going?”
The room went silent.
Caleb looked between them.
Anna did not want this conversation in front of the boys.
“We’ll talk later.”
Daniel nodded.
The answer was respectful.
But his eyes showed fear.
They ate breakfast downstairs.
Daniel wore his full uniform again.
People occasionally glanced toward him.
Anna wondered what they saw.
A decorated officer.
A pregnant wife.
Two sons.
A family reunited.
Nobody could see how close it was to breaking.
After breakfast, Daniel took the boys to look at airplanes through the windows.
Anna sat alone with her phone.
Three unread messages from Evelyn waited.
Anna opened the first.
I hope you’re safe.
The second came twenty minutes later.
Please call me when you can.
The third was different.
Daniel is going to be emotional when he gets back, but remember that he made his choice before he left.
Anna stared.
Her pulse quickened.
What choice?
She showed Daniel when he returned.
His face hardened.
“I didn’t make any choice she knows about.”
Anna watched him.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
“What if she means the command?”
“I declined it.”
“Maybe she doesn’t know.”
“She knows.”
Anna handed him the phone.
“Then ask her.”
Daniel looked surprised.
“Last night you said not to.”
“Last night I wanted information.”
“And now?”
“Now I want the truth.”
Daniel moved toward a quiet corner of the lobby.
Anna followed.
He called Evelyn.
She answered immediately.
“Daniel.”
No surprise.
She knew he was home.
Daniel’s voice was calm.
“Mom.”
“Oh, thank God.”
“Why?”
“Because Anna wasn’t answering.”
Daniel looked at Anna.
“She’s here.”
A pause.
“With you?”
“Yes.”
Another pause.
“That’s unexpected.”
Anna felt anger ignite.
Daniel heard it too.
“What did you expect?”
Evelyn recovered quickly.
“I assumed she had gone to Rachel’s.”
“Why?”
“She needed support.”
“She has a husband.”
“Daniel.”
“No.”
His voice sharpened slightly.
“You sent Anna an email from my account.”
Silence.
Anna held her breath.
Evelyn finally said, “I was trying to help.”
That was all.
No denial.
Daniel closed his eyes.
Anna felt strangely calm.
The uncertainty was gone.
Daniel asked, “You wrote it?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because you refused to see what was happening.”
“What was happening?”
“You were destroying everything you worked for.”
Daniel looked toward the boys.
Caleb was showing Noah something near the window.
“What does that have to do with my wife?”
“Everything.”
Anna clenched her jaw.
Evelyn continued.
“You turned down three career opportunities.”
“My decisions.”
“You made them because of her.”
Daniel’s eyes went cold.
“I made them because of me.”
“You never would have before.”
“I wasn’t a father before.”
“You’re still an officer.”
“And I’m still a husband.”
Evelyn exhaled sharply.
“You were going to regret it.”
“So you tried to make my family leave?”
“I tried to give you space.”
“You lied to my wife.”
“She was already unhappy.”
Anna stepped closer.
Daniel saw her.
He put the phone on speaker.
Evelyn continued without realizing.
“She’s been complaining for months.”
Anna spoke.
“To whom?”
Silence.
Then Evelyn said, “Anna.”
“To whom was I complaining?”
Another silence.
Evelyn’s voice became cooler.
“You told me you were lonely.”
“I told you I missed my husband.”
“That’s the same thing.”
“No.”
Anna’s voice stayed steady.
“It isn’t.”
Daniel watched her.
Anna continued.
“You used my loneliness against me.”
“I was trying to keep Daniel from making a mistake.”
Anna looked at Daniel.
“He isn’t a child.”
“I’m aware.”
“Then why are you managing his marriage?”
Evelyn said nothing.
Daniel spoke.
“Mom, you crossed a line.”
“I protected your future.”
“No.”
Daniel’s voice became absolute.
“You attacked it.”
Evelyn inhaled.
“Daniel.”
“You accessed my account without permission.”
“You gave Michael access.”
“I gave Michael access for a recovery code.”
Anna looked at Daniel.
He continued.
“You impersonated me.”
“I wrote one email.”
“One was enough.”
“I never said you wanted a divorce.”
“You told Rachel we were separating.”
Evelyn went silent.
Daniel’s face changed.
“You did tell her that.”
“I said you needed time.”
“You had no right.”
“I’m your mother.”
Daniel’s answer came instantly.
“And Anna is my wife.”
The words landed hard.
Anna looked away.
Daniel continued.
“You do not get to remove her because you dislike my decisions.”
“I don’t dislike Anna.”
“Then you have a terrible way of showing it.”
Evelyn’s voice softened.
“Daniel, take the command.”
Anna’s eyes widened.
Even now.
Daniel almost laughed.
“No.”
“You will regret this.”
“Maybe.”
He looked at Anna.
“But it will be my regret.”
Evelyn became quiet.
Then she said something none of them expected.
“You may not have a choice anymore.”
Daniel’s expression changed.
“What does that mean?”
“The command wasn’t the only offer.”
“What did you do?”
Evelyn hesitated.
Anna felt the air change.
Daniel repeated the question.
“What did you do?”
Evelyn finally answered.
“I called General Holloway.”
Daniel went completely still.
Anna had never seen his face empty so quickly.
“You did what?”
“I told him you were reconsidering.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Anna suddenly understood why this was no longer merely a family argument.
