Chapter 2: The Empire Behind Her Name

Chapter 2: The Empire Behind Her Name

"I don't understand..."

Daniel's voice cracked.

"This company belongs to my family."

"No," Isabella replied evenly.

"It belongs to mine."

She pressed a button.

A screen illuminated behind her.

Corporate filings.

Property deeds.

Bank transfers.

Investment records.

Every document carried the same signature.

Isabella Sterling.

Nathan stood.

"Five years ago, before your marriage, Ms. Sterling created Sterling Holdings."

Another slide appeared.

"It acquired Harper Development."

Another.

"It financed Harper Luxury Estates."

Another.

"It purchased the residence where you and Mrs. Evelyn Harper currently live."

Daniel felt the room spinning.

"My salary..."

"Came from her."

"My bonuses..."

"Approved by her."

"The house..."

"Hers."

"The allowance Mother receives every month..."

Isabella answered quietly.

"Mine."

Silence crushed the room.

One elderly board member removed his glasses.

"I wondered when she'd finally reveal herself."

Daniel stared at him.

"You knew?"

"We all did."

"You let me believe..."

The chairman interrupted.

"We respected her request."

Daniel looked at Isabella.

"Why?"

She didn't answer immediately.

Instead...

She slid another folder toward him.

Inside were photographs.

Sunday dinners.

Charity galas.

Holiday parties.

Each photo included handwritten notes.

Dates.

Comments.

Witnesses.

Alongside them...

Audio transcripts.

Evelyn insulting her.

Daniel mocking her infertility.

Family members laughing.

Nathan spoke softly.

"Three years."

"Every incident documented."

"Every humiliation recorded."

Daniel whispered,

"You planned this?"

"No."

Isabella's eyes glistened.

"I hoped I'd never need it."

That afternoon Evelyn was shopping on Rodeo Drive when her credit card declined.

She frowned.

"Run it again."

Declined.

"My other card."

Declined.

"The platinum one."

Declined.

The sales associate shifted awkwardly.

"I'm sorry, Mrs. Harper."

Evelyn called Daniel immediately.

He answered after several rings.

"Mother..."

"Why are all our accounts frozen?"

Daniel couldn't speak.

She heard only one sentence.

"The money wasn't ours."
