Chapter 10 - Rebirth and Retribution

The trial never happened. Faced with Mason's testimony, the mountain of digital evidence I provided, and the newly uncovered lockbox of jewelry that the FBI seized within twenty-four hours of our jailhouse visit, Teresa’s defense collapsed.
She took a blind plea deal.
The judge sentenced her to twelve years in federal prison for wire fraud, forgery, and grand larceny, with no possibility of early parole.
The civil suits utterly decimated the extended family. Aunt Beatrice and her husband were forced to file for bankruptcy and sell their home to pay back the stolen funds they had received. My other relatives scattered to the winds, their reputations ruined, their finances gutted. The toxic tree had been pulled up by its roots and burned.
Two years later, the nightmare was firmly behind us.
It was a warm Saturday afternoon. I stood on the back porch of our home, watching Frederick—now a completely healthy, energetic three-year-old—chasing a golden retriever puppy across the pristine green lawn.
Amy stepped out onto the porch holding two glasses of iced tea. She looked radiant. The hollowed-out, exhausted girl I had found in the kitchen that fateful day was completely gone. In her place was a strong, confident woman. With the recovered funds from Teresa's hidden stash, Amy had opened her own boutique bakery downtown—a dream she had shelved years ago to save money.
She handed me a glass and leaned against my shoulder, watching our son laugh as the puppy tackled him into the grass.
"He's getting so big," she murmured, a soft, content smile on her lips.
"He takes after his mother," I said, wrapping my arm around her waist and pulling her close. "Strong and resilient."

I looked out at the backyard. There were no rented tables. There were no leeches drinking expensive liquor. There was only the gentle rustle of the oak trees, the sound of my son's laughter, and the undeniable peace of a home that was completely, truly ours.
We had walked through absolute hell. But we had burned the devil who brought us there, and from the ashes, we had built a life that nobody would ever tear down again.
