CHAPTER 3 — THE FALLING STRUCTURE

It happened quickly after that.

Too quickly for someone who had built his identity on control.

Phones began ringing.

Matthew’s.

Lauren’s.

Then his CFO’s.

Then his board’s.

He answered one.

Then another.

Then none.

His face changed with each call.

Confusion first.

Then disbelief.

Then something closer to panic.

“What did you do?” he snapped at my father.

My father didn’t raise his voice.

“I didn’t do anything,” he said. “I simply stopped protecting what was never stable.”

Lauren’s phone slipped from her hand.

Her voice shook. “The offshore accounts… they’re frozen.”

Matthew turned sharply toward her. “What accounts?”

She hesitated too long.

That hesitation was enough.

My father stepped forward slightly.

“NexusCore isn’t collapsing,” he said. “It’s being dismantled. Quietly. Legally. Completely.”

Matthew’s breathing changed.

“No… no, you don’t understand—this company is mine.”

My father tilted his head.

“For seven years,” he said, “it only survived because it was built on mine.”

The room went still.

Even the air felt heavier.
