Chapter 1: The Lie He Chose

Chapter 1: The Lie He Chose

"You know her?"

Vanessa's voice cracked for the first time.

Adrian's eyes met mine only briefly before he forced a polite smile.

"Yes," he answered. "Claire... used to work with one of our investment partners."

Used to.

Not my wife.

Not even Claire Bennett.

For twelve years, I had protected his reputation.

In less than twelve seconds, he erased our marriage.

The silence inside the executive pantry became unbearable.

Vanessa visibly relaxed.

"Oh," she laughed. "I knew it. She's been pretending to know important people all morning."

She crossed her arms triumphantly.

"I had to discipline her. She touched your water bottle."

Adrian looked at the bottle.

Then at the red mark spreading across my cheek.

Every decent husband would have demanded an explanation.

Instead, he sighed.

"Claire," he said quietly, "this isn't the place."

I almost smiled.

Not because it was funny.

Because everything suddenly made sense.

The late-night meetings.

The missing jewelry.

The unexplained expenses.

The anonymous emails.

He wasn't protecting the company.

He was protecting her.

One of the security officers shifted uneasily.

"Mr. Bennett... should we review the surveillance footage?"

Vanessa interrupted immediately.

"That's unnecessary."

"It will only waste everyone's time."

I spoke before Adrian could answer.

"No."

Everyone looked at me.

"I insist."

Adrian's jaw tightened.

"The footage won't change anything."

"It will," I replied.

"It will show exactly who assaulted whom."

The younger security officer quietly radioed the control room.

"Please preserve footage from Executive Pantry Four, beginning at 9:00 a.m."

Vanessa's face turned pale.

"You don't have authority to order that."

The guard answered calmly.

"Any report involving physical assault requires evidence preservation."

For the first time, Vanessa looked genuinely frightened.

Not because of me.

Because cameras never lied.

...

Twenty minutes later, every executive conference room television displayed the footage.

No sound.

No editing.

Only crystal-clear video.

Me.

Taking one sip from the bottle.

Vanessa walking across the room.

Slapping me.

Trying to grab my phone.

Calling security.

The room fell silent again.

Even Adrian couldn't deny what everyone had just watched.

The Director of Human Resources slowly removed her glasses.

"Ms. Cole..."

"Would you like to explain why you physically assaulted an employee?"

Vanessa pointed at me.

"She provoked me!"

"By drinking from my husband's bottle!"

Nobody answered.

Because everyone had heard it.

"My husband."

The words echoed through the room.

HR frowned.

"Mr. Bennett..."

"...why exactly does your executive assistant believe you're married to her?"

Adrian didn't answer immediately.

That hesitation lasted only four seconds.

It destroyed everything.

That afternoon, I requested an emergency meeting of the Board of Directors.

Most of them thought it concerned declining quarterly profits.

None of them expected me.

When the conference room doors opened, twelve directors stood simultaneously.

Because unlike the employees—

they knew exactly who I was.

"Good afternoon, Chairwoman Hail."

Vanessa nearly dropped the tablet in her hands.

Chairwoman?

She stared at me.

Then at the directors.

Then back at Adrian.

"What..."

"...what did they just call her?"

I walked to the head of the table.

The seat that had remained empty for years.

"My name," I said calmly,

"is Claire Hail."

"The Hail Family Trust."

"The majority shareholder of Bennett Meridian Group."

Every ounce of color disappeared from Vanessa's face.

"No..."

She whispered.

"No..."

She slowly turned toward Adrian.

"You said..."

"...you said your wife never came here."

May you like

Adrian couldn't look at either of us.

Because he had lied to both women.
