Chapter 2: The Truth Emily Had Been Hiding

Chapter 2: The Truth Emily Had Been Hiding

After they left, I carried Leo upstairs.

His fever was still high.

The pediatrician confirmed it was a severe viral infection made worse because he hadn't been drinking enough fluids.

Fortunately, we had caught it before it became dangerous.

That thought haunted me.

What if I had come home one day later?

That night, after Leo finally fell asleep in our bed, Emily sat beside me in the dark.

She looked smaller than I had ever seen her.

"I didn't tell you because I didn't want to distract you during your trip."

I took her hand.

"What else happened?"

She hesitated.

Then she opened a notebook.

Every page contained dates.

Small notes.

Things my mother had said.

Things my sister had done.

Monday:

"A good wife doesn't complain."

Tuesday:

"Your career doesn't matter now that you're a mother."

Wednesday:

"Maybe Leo cries so much because you don't know what you're doing."

Thursday:

Emily had written only three words.

"Cried in bathroom."

Friday morning:

"I don't think I can do this anymore."

My chest tightened.

She hadn't been living with guests.

She had been living with critics.

Every meal she cooked was judged.

Every parenting decision questioned.

Every mistake magnified.

Yet she smiled through all of it...

Because she didn't want to create conflict between me and my family.

I wrapped my arms around her.

"You never have to carry this alone again."

She cried quietly.

Not because she was weak.

Because someone had finally believed her.

The next morning, I called my employer.

"I need family leave."

No hesitation.

No apologies.

For the next two weeks, nothing mattered more than my wife and my son.

Together we cleaned the house.

Cooked simple meals.

Took turns caring for Leo.

Little by little...

Laughter returned.
