The silence that followed was heavier than any threat Santiago had ever made.
Ricardo Salazar stood in the doorway without saying a word. His silver hair framed a face carved by decades of impossible negotiations, ruthless victories, and painful sacrifices. Behind him, two attorneys carried slim leather briefcases, while three security officers remained perfectly still.
Nobody moved.
Beatriz was the first to recover.
"I'm sorry," she said with a practiced smile. "This is a private family matter."
Ricardo's eyes never left me.
"Is that what you call threatening my pregnant daughter?"
Every ounce of color drained from Santiago's face.
"Daughter?"
His voice cracked.
He looked at me as if he had never truly seen me before.
"You... you know him?"
I nodded slowly.
"I've always known him."
"You lied to me!"
"No," I answered calmly. "I simply never told you who I was."
Ricardo finally stepped forward, stopping beside me.
His hand rested gently on my shoulder.
It was the first time in years I had felt safe.
"You raised your hand against her?" he asked.
Santiago forced himself to laugh.
"Sir, this is a misunderstanding."
Ricardo turned toward one of his attorneys.
"Play it."
The attorney connected a tablet to the massive television mounted above the fireplace.
The room filled with sound.
Santiago shouting.
My voice begging him to stop.
His threats.
His confession that no one would believe me.
Then the image everyone feared most appeared.
His hand striking me across the face while I held my pregnant stomach.
Beatriz gasped.
Santiago lunged toward the television.
"Turn it off!"
No one moved.
The recording continued.
Every insult.
Every bruise.
Every threat.
Every crime.
When it ended, Ricardo spoke only one sentence.
"You have exactly five minutes before the police arrive."
