Chapter 1: The Man They Should Never Have Crossed

Chapter 1: The Man They Should Never Have Crossed

The silence inside the mansion lasted only a heartbeat.

Then Ricardo Salazar spoke.

"Take one more step toward my daughter."

His voice wasn't loud.

It didn't need to be.

Every security guard in the foyer instinctively moved forward, placing themselves between Valeria and Santiago.

Santiago frowned.

"Excuse me? Who do you think you are?"

Ricardo removed his leather gloves one finger at a time before looking directly into the eyes of the man who had terrorized his daughter.

"I'm the man who built the empire that's been quietly keeping yours alive."

One of the attorneys stepped forward and placed a thick folder on the marble table.

"Mr. Rivas," he said calmly, "Grupo Salazar currently holds every outstanding bridge loan issued to Rivas Holdings over the past eight months."

Santiago's confident smile faltered.

"That's impossible."

"It isn't."

Another document slid across the table.

"Those loans contain an acceleration clause. Effective immediately, the entire balance is due."

Beatriz hurried down the staircase.

"This has to be some misunderstanding."

"There is none," Ricardo replied.

"You believed my daughter had no family."

He looked toward Valeria, whose trembling hands still rested over her unborn son.

"You believed no one would come for her."

His eyes hardened.

"You were wrong."

Santiago suddenly laughed.

"So what? Money doesn't prove abuse."

Ricardo slowly nodded.

"You're absolutely right."

He turned toward one of his attorneys.

"Play the recording."

The attorney opened a tablet.

Within seconds, Santiago's own voice echoed through the mansion.

"If you don't sign the papers tomorrow, that baby is going to enter this world without a mother."

The room froze.

Then came the sound of Beatriz calmly instructing him not to leave bruises before the charity gala.

Every insult.

Every threat.

Every slap.

Captured from the hidden camera.

Santiago's face drained of color.

"You recorded me?"

"No," Valeria answered quietly.

"You exposed yourself."

Before anyone could speak again, flashing blue and red lights reflected across the front windows.

Police vehicles surrounded the estate.

The lead detective entered with an arrest warrant already in hand.

"Santiago Rivas. Beatriz Rivas."

"You are both under investigation for domestic violence, conspiracy, fraud, forgery, unlawful imprisonment, and attempted kidnapping of a minor."

Beatriz stumbled backward.

"This is absurd!"

The detective looked toward Valeria's bruised face.

"No, ma'am."

"This is evidence."

As officers placed handcuffs on Santiago, he finally lost control.

"You can't do this!"

Ricardo looked at him without the slightest emotion.

"You spent years convincing my daughter she was powerless."

"Tonight, you're learning what powerless really feels like."
