Chapter 11 - The Vanishing Plan.

Sabrina would not explain everything over the phone.

She said she wanted a lawyer present.

Rebecca arranged a meeting the next morning at a neutral law office forty miles from the city.

Val went with Marcus and Rebecca.

Adrian was not invited.

He objected until Rebecca reminded him that Sabrina might become a witness in both the financial investigation and the divorce.

Val arrived at nine twenty.

Sabrina was already there.

She looked nothing like the polished executive Val remembered from holiday parties.

Her blonde hair had been cut to her shoulders.

Dark circles sat beneath her eyes.

She stood when Val entered, then seemed unsure whether to offer her hand.

Val sat instead.

"Tell me what she wanted."

Sabrina looked at her attorney.

He nodded.

"Lenora first asked me to copy your signatures about two years ago."

Val kept her face still.

"Why did you agree?"

"She said it was for routine trust paperwork because you were always traveling."

"You knew that wasn't true."

"Eventually."

"When?"

Sabrina swallowed.

"When she asked me to wear your coat."

The room became silent.

Sabrina described a storage unit where Lenora kept duplicates of Val's clothing.

A white winter coat.

A navy dress.

A pair of sunglasses.

Even a blonde wig styled to match Val's hair on formal occasions.

"Why?" Rebecca asked.

"Cameras."

Sabrina's voice shook.

"She wanted footage that looked like Val entering places she had never been."

Val felt sick.

"Which places?"

"A private bank. A hotel. An airport parking garage."

Marcus leaned forward.

"Did you do it?"

"The bank and hotel. Not the airport."

"What happened at the bank?"

Sabrina closed her eyes.

"I carried a document envelope into a private meeting room and left with another one."

"What was inside?"

"I didn't know then."

"Do you know now?"

"Copies of the Northlight loan documents and cash withdrawal receipts."

Val understood.

The footage could make it appear that she had personally handled the fake loan.

"And the hotel?"

"I checked in under your name using an identification card Lenora gave me."

Rebecca's pen stopped.

"A false identification card?"

"Yes."

"What date?"

Sabrina named a weekend Val had been in Seattle for a charity board meeting.

Marcus checked his records.

There were photographs proving Val had been across the country.

"Why create hotel footage?" he asked.

Sabrina looked at Val.

"To make it look like she was meeting someone."

Val's stomach tightened.

"Who?"

"A man named Ethan Ross. He was supposed to be a private lender."

"Supposed to be?"

"He was an actor."

The absurdity almost made Val laugh.

Instead she felt anger moving upward through her chest.

A staged affair.

A staged loan.

A staged financial escape.

Lenora had been constructing an alternate version of Val's life one camera at a time.

"What did disappearing mean?" Val asked.

Sabrina's hands began trembling.

"Lenora said there would eventually be a morning when Val left the house after an argument and never came back."

Rebecca interrupted immediately.

"Did she threaten physical harm?"

"She never said anyone would hurt her."

Sabrina looked directly at Val.

"I need you to believe that."

"What did she say?"

"That you would be made to look like you ran."

Lenora planned to move a large sum through accounts bearing Val's forged authorization.

Sabrina would appear on selected surveillance cameras wearing Val's clothes.

A fabricated goodbye email would be sent from Val's account.

Travel records would show a ticket purchased in her name.

Then, according to Sabrina, Lenora expected the scandal itself to do the rest.

"She said Adrian would divorce you publicly," Sabrina whispered.

"She said the board would accuse you of stealing from Mercer Development. She said the trust would become tied up in litigation."

"And the children?"

Sabrina started crying.

"She said they would need stability."

Val did not move.

"Meaning Lenora."

"Yes."

"And Adrian?"

"She said he would be too damaged by the scandal and the company collapse to fight her."

Marcus's jaw tightened.

"So the guardianship petition was designed for after the financial frame."

Sabrina nodded.

"She wanted everyone to believe Val abandoned the family with stolen money."

Val looked through the glass wall into the empty corridor.

For the first time, she understood the scale of Lenora's resentment.

This was not about protecting Adrian.

It was about possessing the Mercer name, the grandchildren, and the remains of the company after everyone else had been discredited.

"Why did you stop?" Val asked.

Sabrina wiped her face.

"Because she asked me to record a goodbye video."

Rebecca's voice sharpened.

"A video of you pretending to be Val?"

"Yes."

"Did you?"

"Once."

Val felt her heartbeat in her throat.

Sabrina opened a laptop.

"I kept a copy."

The video began.

A woman sat in shadow with blonde hair falling over one side of her face.

The lighting was deliberately poor.

She wore Val's white coat.

When she spoke, the voice was Sabrina's, but the script used phrases Val had said in private emails.

"I can't do this anymore."

The woman on screen looked down.

"I'm sorry for what I took. I'm sorry for leaving the boys."

Val stopped the video.

She could not watch another second.

Marcus looked furious.

Rebecca looked clinical, which was somehow more frightening.

"Who wrote the script?"

Sabrina answered.

"Lenora."

Val stared at the paused image of someone wearing her face badly enough to fool only people who wanted to believe it.

"Why wasn't it used?"

"Because I refused to do the airport footage."

"Why?"

"I finally understood there would be no way back."

Sabrina's voice cracked.

"And because Adrian told me something after we ended our affair."

Val's eyes narrowed.

"What?"

"He said no matter how angry he became with you, he knew you would never abandon the boys."

Val looked away.

The sentence hurt in a different way.

Adrian had known her well enough to recognize the lie.

He had simply not respected her enough to protect the truth.

Sabrina slid a flash drive across the table.

"Everything I kept is here. Emails, drafts, the video, payment records."

Marcus did not touch it until her attorney documented the transfer.

Then Sabrina added one more sentence.

"There is a file called December Exit."

Val looked at her.

"What is it?"

May you like

Sabrina's face went pale.

"The plan was scheduled for next month."
