Chapter 1: The Lies Begin to Crack

Chapter 1: The Lies Begin to Crack
Vivian forced a nervous smile.
"Richard... you're misunderstanding."
Richard didn't answer.
His arms tightened around Lily as he felt how cold her tiny body was. Her hands were red and raw from the icy water. Tiny cuts covered her fingers.
His stomach twisted.
"Lily," he whispered gently. "Who made you do this?"
She buried her face against his shoulder.
"Mommy said I spilled juice yesterday... She said bad girls don't deserve dinner unless they clean."
Richard froze.
"What else?"
Lily hesitated.
"I... I wasn't allowed to tell you."
The words hit him harder than any punch.
Richard slowly stood, still carrying his daughter.
He looked directly into Vivian's eyes.
"Tell me she's lying."
Vivian crossed her arms.
"Children exaggerate."
"She needs discipline."
"You spoil her."
Richard's expression darkened.
"Discipline?"
He pointed toward the bucket of freezing water.
"She's six years old."
Vivian's voice sharpened.
"She's not my daughter."
Silence crashed over the room.
Richard stared at the woman he had married.
For the first time...
He realized she wasn't angry.
She wasn't stressed.
She simply didn't love Lily.
His heart sank as dozens of strange memories suddenly made sense.
The unexplained bruises.
The nightmares.
The times Lily begged him not to leave for business trips.
He had believed every excuse.
He would never forgive himself.
Without another word, Richard carried Lily upstairs.
He wrapped her in a warm blanket, called their family doctor, and stayed beside her until she fell asleep.
Then he walked back downstairs.
Vivian was waiting.
She expected another argument.
Instead...
Richard quietly picked up his phone.
"Michael."
His longtime head of security answered immediately.
"Yes, sir."
"I want every security recording from this house for the past six months."
Vivian's smile disappeared.
"What?"
"You heard me."
Richard's eyes never left hers.
"And don't tell anyone."

For the first time that evening...
Vivian looked afraid.
