Chapter 2: The Truth Comes Out
The emergency board meeting began at 11:15 p.m.
Every director attended.
So did Isabella.
She entered wearing a simple navy suit instead of the evening gown Marcus had humiliated hours earlier.
The room rose to its feet.
Marcus stared.
"They're standing for you?"
One elderly board member smiled.
"We've always stood for the Hawthorne family."
The Chairman slid another folder across the table.
"Eleven years ago, your father entrusted you with operational control while Isabella protected the ownership structure."
Marcus turned toward Isabella.
"You lied to me."
She met his eyes without emotion.
"No."
"I simply never corrected your assumptions."
The board approved one resolution after another.
Removal of Marcus Bennett as CEO.
Termination of his employment.
Cancellation of every executive benefit.
Recovery of company housing.
Recovery of company vehicles.
Recovery of stock options that had never legally vested.
Even the penthouse Marcus called home belonged to the trust.
His mistress suddenly stood.
"You told me you owned everything."
Marcus couldn't answer.
She quietly removed the sapphire brooch.
Placed it on the conference table.
