Margaret opened her mouth, but for the first time in years, no excuse came fast enough.
"Daniel, this isn't what it looks like."
His eyes never left Ava, lying on the hardwood floor, struggling to breathe after the fall.
"It looks exactly like I feared."
He rushed past his mother and dropped to his knees beside his wife.
"Ava... are you hurt?"
She nodded weakly, tears filling her eyes.
"I tried not to sign."
Daniel glanced toward the papers.
The power of attorney.
Transfer of financial authority.
Authorization for full medical control.
Every page already prepared.
Only Ava's signature was missing.
Behind him, Rosa slowly stood, one hand pressed against her reddening cheek.
"She tried to force Mrs. Carter to sign," Rosa said quietly.
Margaret immediately pointed at Rosa.
"She's lying! She's only the housekeeper."
Daniel slowly stood.
"No."
His voice remained calm.
"She's the only person telling the truth."
Margaret's face turned pale.
"You don't understand. I was protecting our family."
"My family," Daniel replied.
"You stopped being part of that the moment you decided to steal from my wife."
Margaret laughed nervously.
"You can't prove anything."
Daniel reached into his jacket.
"I wasn't supposed to come home today."
He placed his phone on the desk.
"But my meeting ended early."
He tapped the screen.
"The security system notified me that someone entered my private office."
The study became silent.
A video began playing.
Margaret arranging the documents.
Margaret handing Ava the medication.
Margaret whispering,
"Just sign, sweetheart. Everything will be easier."
Then...
The slap.
Every second had been captured.
Margaret slowly sank into the nearest chair.
Her confidence disappeared with every frame.
Daniel pressed pause.
"I've already uploaded the recording to my attorney."
No one spoke.
