Chapter 1: The Woman Under the Bed

Chapter 1: The Woman Under the Bed

The room fell silent.

From beneath the hospital bed, I could only see shoes.

A pair of polished black dress shoes.

A doctor's white sneakers.

And my mother-in-law Linda's expensive heels.

My newborn son slept peacefully in the bassinet only a few feet away.

"Where is she?" the doctor asked.

Linda didn't sound surprised.

"She must have gone to the restroom."

"Impossible," the doctor replied. "She just gave birth."

Silence.

Then Linda lowered her voice.

"It doesn't matter. We have the authorization."

"No," the doctor answered firmly. "I only have photocopies. I need the original consent forms."

Consent forms?

What consent forms?

My breathing became shallow.

Emily had crawled onto the chair beside the bed, pretending to color in her notebook.

She never looked toward me.

Not once.

She was protecting me.

Linda sighed impatiently.

"My son signed them. His wife agreed before labor."

My husband?

Ryan?

My chest tightened.

No...

He would never...

Would he?

The doctor hesitated.

"Without the patient's confirmation, I won't proceed."

Linda's tone turned cold.

"You don't understand. Once she learns the truth, she'll take both children and leave."

The doctor frowned.

"What truth?"

Linda answered with a sentence that shattered my entire world.

"The baby isn't hers to keep."

My blood turned to ice.

At that exact moment, Emily deliberately dropped her crayons onto the floor.

As everyone bent to help her, she whispered so quietly only I could hear.

"Mom... Dad's coming."

Seconds later, the door opened again.

Ryan rushed inside.

"Dad!" Emily cried.

Ryan looked around the room.

His face turned pale.

"Where's Sarah?"

Linda smiled.

"She's resting."

But Ryan wasn't looking at Linda.

He was staring at the empty hospital bed.

And for the first time in years...

He looked terrified.
