Chapter 10 - The Witness

Charlotte read Lauren's name again.

Then again.

The letters did not change.

Lauren Hale.

Witness.

Maya watched Charlotte carefully.

"Do not call her angry."

"She's my sister."

"That doesn't make anger useful."

"She watched Emma yesterday."

"I know."

"She stood on her porch and told me David came by."

"I know."

Charlotte pushed away from the table.

"And now her signature is on a fake operating agreement."

Maya kept her voice level.

"We don't yet know whether her signature is fake."

That sentence hurt more than Charlotte expected.

Because the signature looked real.

Lauren had a distinctive way of making the capital L too large.

The witness signature had that exact exaggerated loop.

Charlotte called her anyway.

Not angry.

Not calm either.

"Can you come to Maya's office?"

Lauren hesitated.

"Now?"

"Yes."

"Is Emma okay?"

"She's at school."

"Then what's wrong?"

Charlotte stared at the operating agreement.

"I need you to see something."

Lauren arrived forty minutes later wearing jeans and a navy sweater.

She walked into the conference room smiling nervously.

"You two look like somebody died."

Nobody smiled back.

Maya slid the document across the table.

Lauren read it.

Her face drained of color.

Charlotte watched every movement.

"Is that your signature?"

Lauren sat down slowly.

"Yes."

Charlotte's throat tightened.

"You witnessed me signing this?"

"No."

The answer came immediately.

Charlotte blinked.

"Then why is your name there?"

Lauren pressed both palms against the table.

"David brought me a page."

"When?"

"Last year."

"What page?"

"Just the signature page."

Charlotte laughed once in disbelief.

"Of course."

Lauren looked ashamed.

"He said you had already signed it and needed a witness because you were traveling."

"And you believed him?"

"He was your husband."

Charlotte stood.

"That sentence is becoming very expensive."

Lauren flinched.

Maya stepped in.

"Lauren, did you see Charlotte's signature already on the page when you signed?"

"Yes."

"Was there text above it?"

"A company name, I think."

"Hale Family Holdings?"

Lauren frowned.

"Maybe."

Charlotte turned away.

Lauren's voice cracked.

"I didn't know."

Charlotte looked back.

"You didn't ask."

"No."

"Did David ever ask you to sign anything else?"

Lauren's eyes shifted.

Charlotte saw it.

"Lauren."

"There was one other thing."

"What?"

"A letter saying you had given him permission to handle a property purchase."

Charlotte gripped the back of a chair.

"You witnessed that too?"

Lauren shook her head quickly.

"No. I typed it."

The room went silent.

Maya leaned forward.

"Explain exactly what you mean."

Lauren swallowed.

"David sent me a voice note."

"Why you?"

"Because my printer was working and his wasn't."

Charlotte stared at her.

Lauren continued.

"He dictated a short letter. He said you needed it for some investment paperwork. I typed it, emailed it to him, and forgot about it."

"Do you still have the email?"

"Maybe."

Lauren took out her phone.

She searched her sent mail.

Nothing.

Then she searched archived messages.

Her face changed.

"I have the voice note."

Maya's posture sharpened.

"Do not play it yet."

Lauren looked confused.

"Why?"

"Because I want you to forward the original file with metadata preserved."

Lauren did.

Aaron downloaded it to a secure evidence folder.

Then they played it.

David's voice filled the conference room.

"Hey, Lauren, quick favor. Charlotte needs a simple authorization letter for the Ridge investment. Just type this exactly."

There was a pause.

Then David dictated:

"I, Charlotte Hale, authorize my husband, David Mercer, to execute documents and direct funds related to the acquisition, improvement, and management of 1418 Halston Ridge on my behalf."

Charlotte's hands went cold.

The recording continued.

"Put today's date on it and send it back. She already approved everything."

Lauren covered her mouth.

"Oh my God."

Charlotte looked at Maya.

"He gave us his own voice."

Maya nodded slowly.

"Maybe."

"Maybe?"

"It proves he dictated the letter. It doesn't by itself prove you didn't approve the plan separately."

Charlotte wanted to scream.

Instead she sat.

Aaron checked the email attachment Lauren had originally sent David.

The document had no signature.

But the version David submitted to the court did.

Charlotte's signature appeared at the bottom.

Again.

Then Aaron noticed something else.

The submitted version contained a footer not present in Lauren's original.

Prepared by: Grant & Mercer Administrative Services.

Melissa's former office.

Maya called Melissa.

Melissa answered immediately.

When Maya described the authorization letter, Melissa went silent.

"I remember it."

Charlotte closed her eyes.

"Did you see me sign it?"

"No."

"Did David ask you to notarize it?"

"No."

Melissa's next words came slowly.

"He asked me to scan a signature onto it."

Charlotte opened her eyes.

Maya said, "Did you?"

Melissa looked directly at the camera.

"No."

Charlotte's breath caught.

"Then who did?"

Melissa hesitated.

"Evelyn."

Before anyone could respond, Maya's assistant opened the conference room door.

She held a certified envelope.

"Charlotte, this was just delivered for you."

Charlotte opened it.

It was from the county tax assessor.

Lauren cried after the voice note finished.

Charlotte did not rush to comfort her.

She was not ready.

But she also did not attack her.

Lauren had been careless, and that carelessness had consequences.

It was still different from knowingly building the scheme.

Maya later told Charlotte that separating negligence from intent would matter both legally and personally.

Charlotte hated how reasonable that sounded.

Anger wanted simple categories.

Good person.

Bad person.

Loyal.

Disloyal.

The evidence refused to cooperate.

Some people had been manipulated.

Some had been selfish.

Some had known exactly what they were doing.

Charlotte would have to learn the difference without excusing any of it.
