CHAPTER 2: WHAT THE CHILD REMEMBERED

CHAPTER 2: WHAT THE CHILD REMEMBERED

The guests were asked to leave within ten minutes.

No one argued.

No one even asked questions.

Luxury houses have a way of making people obey without explanation.

Only Camille remained in the living room, pacing like someone trying to regain control of a story that had already ended without her permission.

Darian sat on the sofa with Layla still in his arms.

Mrs. Okafor stood nearby.

“She always flinches when adults raise their voice now,” the nanny said softly. “Not from fear of pain… but from fear of disappearing again.”

Camille scoffed. “That’s ridiculous. I never touched her.”

No one responded immediately.

That silence again.

Layla lifted her head slightly.

Her voice was small, but steady.

“You said I can’t be seen,” she whispered.

Camille rolled her eyes. “Oh my God, she’s twisting it—”

“Stop,” Darian said.

One word.

Camille stopped.

Not because she wanted to.

Because something in his tone made it clear there would not be a second warning.

Darian looked at her for a long moment.

“I built this house,” he said. “But I stopped feeling like I lived in it when you decided silence mattered more than my daughter.”

Camille’s face tightened. “So you’re choosing her over me.”

Darian didn’t answer immediately.

He adjusted Layla in his arms, gently smoothing her hair.

Then he said, “No. I’m choosing truth over comfort.”

Camille laughed once, sharp and disbelieving. “You’re going to throw away everything because of a misunderstanding?”

But Layla, still resting against her father’s shoulder, whispered something no one expected.

“She lied about Mommy too.”

The room froze again.

Even Camille stopped moving.

Darian slowly looked down at his daughter.

“What did you say?”

Layla hesitated, as if unsure whether she was allowed to speak the memory out loud.

Then she pointed—not at Camille this time, but at a small drawer near the hallway entrance.

Mrs. Okafor went pale.

“That drawer,” Layla said softly, “has Mommy’s bracelet.”

May you like

Darian’s breath caught.

Because Sophia had been buried with that bracelet.
